Trigger-happy US cops vs black citizens is surely up there amongst the most horrible problems our sick world has. I haven't even checked out most of them, but the most horrifically-telling of all was the one where during a night-chase they unleashed over a dozen bullets into an unarmed victim's chest, then had the appalling gall to ask in worried concerned voices "Are you ok? Sir, we need to know if you're injured".

Honestly that was one of the most chilling things I've ever seen. And there's many examples similar to this. Often I try to understand both sides to a story...but I really struggle with these cases. I have black friends in US (Detroit & New York) and I'd quite like them to move to Europe to avoid getting shot by the police for no reason.

Sure, I understand the big issues with black-on-black gun crime (statistically I believe the worst category for gun crime) but if society's response is for the police to murderously-fear all black men then that is sick. A horrible counter-productive sickness which will only make things worse. If I was the brother of one of these victims my thoughts towards the police would be unprintable to say the least.

As much as I've criticised identity politics (BLM among them) it's cases like this which really makes one understand these movements more.

Awful situations call for drastic solutions: I see no alternative other than to ban all guns for all folk, with long jail time for those caught dealing/buying on the black market. In time the police will feel it's less likely a random black man will have a gun on him. Many many lives will be saved, America would slowly but surely become a whole lot less cruel.

Not gonna happen, is it?

the term 'hearts and minds' appears to be lost on most members of the US police force in their varied guises, there are social circumstance you cannot arrest your way out of

Nope, not going to happen.

Would help if there was a proper review process and juries were prepared to treat cops a little more like regular people and convict for the egregious examples so at least there was a modicum of justice for victims but even that is a bit of a forlorn hope.

Some police forces are implementing training on deescalation techniques which have shown some success in reducing use of force but unfortunately it isn’t compulsory and funding can be sparse. So far 333 have been reportedly shot dead by police this year - on track for over 1100 by year end https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/national/police-shootings-2018/?utm_term=.c36369db75a2
Obviously there will be many instances where force was the only option but that is a depressingly high number.

.....police in Tennessee say a nude gunman has shot and killed 3 people and injured at least 4 others in a restaurant on the outskirts of Nashville.
Thank goodness for this brave guy who disarmed the shooter as without him it probably would have been even worse.

James Shaw Jr., 29, said he saw an opportunity to tackle the man shooting into an Antioch Waffle House after feeling cornered. He said he doesn’t feel like a hero. Police spokesman Don Aaron told reporters Sunday morning that the Waffle House hero rushed the suspected shooter, disarmed him and threw the assault rifle he was carrying over the counter.

..brave lad.

If only everyone in the restaurant was eating guns, then this wouldn't have happened.

... or something like that, I dunno. MAGA.

What is the point if seizing weapons if you are going to hand them straight back to a family member/friend?

The 29-year-old Illinois man accused of carrying out a fatal shooting Sunday morning at an Antioch Waffle House previously had weapons removed from his possession after a 2017 arrest near the White House. Travis Reinking opened fire early Sunday morning at the Waffle House, killing at least four people, Nashville police say. At least seven others were injured.
"He wanted to set up a meeting with the president," said Secret Service representative Todd Hudson.

After the arrest, his Illinois firearms authorization was revoked and local Illinois police seized four weapons. "Among the weapons seized by those authorities was the AR-15 rifle used at the Waffle House today," said Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron at a Sunday afternoon news conference.

Police believe Reinking's father received the weapons after their confiscation, and returned them to his son. Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson said he believes under Illinois law, guns seized can be returned to someone who has a valid state authorization.

the only thing that can stop a bad naked man with a gun, is a good naked man with a gun

Or a...naked gun?

Just on the fella who snatched the AR-15 inthe Waffle House. That’s a proper hero, imagine being able to tell that story?

Amazing.
