@Pettifogger, @mezzrow your thoughts?

I loathe this idea and I’m for gun control and Gvro’s! Think it breaks not only 2nd but quite possibly 4th and 14th amendments!

He is talking his usual absolute bobbins - but if you want law enforcement to be able to deal promptly with people who might shoot up schools, creches, workplaces, cinemas etc then that is the sort of thing that would be required.

Obviously I can't support that, but I also don't worry too much about what Trump says on a given day. A lot of people, including Trump, don't seem to want to put in the effort required to come up with a decent answer on the guns/mental health combination question. It's going to involve, as you correctly indicate, some tough discussions that go beyond just 2A rights.

I dont think he has, I think you do support the NRA, you might not be a member but you certainly seem to support them.
oh, and on arming teachers

"this is why you don't arm teachers" - Mrs. Mezz

Are we doing the thing where you ask questions, I answer, and then you call me dishonest and terrible and take your ball and go home? Because I've done that about 4 times already and I don't have interest in doing it again.

I'm not a member of the NRA. I don't particularly support the NRA. I was previously a member some years ago and cancelled on account of the NRA's advertising tactics and general obnoxiousness (including to members). I support some of the same goals of the NRA, of course.

No, i was genuinely interested so I'll ignore the first part.

You curiously called out cheese for saying you liked them considering you have spent many pages defending them and saying the criticism of them was over the top. So like i said i was curious.

Agree that Trump is spouting bobbins, laws never seen to be much impediment in his thinking!

However gvro’s are meant to be a pretty fast process, cops can probably legally hold the suspect in custody (even without eventual charges) if it was deemed such an imminent threat whilst they get the judge on the phone.

Temporary Emergency GVRO (form EPO-002): A Temporary Emergency GVRO is a type of order that only law enforcement officers can request. This is available to officers when they encounter a person who poses “immediate and present danger of injury to self or others as a result of having a gun” and the requesting officer concludes that an emergency order is needed to effectively intervene. This emergency order is issued verbally by a judge (whom the officers may call 24 hours a day, seven days a week), is effective immediately, and expires after 21 days. The issuance of a Temporary Emergency Order does not preclude a law enforcement officer or family member from petitioning for an Ex Parte GVRO. In addition, a Temporary Emergency GVRO may be issued over the phone if necessary, but should normally be sought by written petition

Good. For your curiosity, then:

NRA Pros:
1) No holds barred 2A defense. They're the tip of the spear on a subject I care about.
2) Gun resources - They're the top source of gun safety classes and gun education in the country.

NRA Cons:
1) Obnoxious fear mongering campaigns, including somehow conflating 2A rights with the thread of Muslim terrorism as though we're on the verge of a Red Dawn scenario involving Muslims (just one example).
2) Bullying local and small gun rights organizations over differences in vision/opinion.
3) What I think are bullying or deceptive tactics relating to membership.

- I don't have any particular instance where I think the NRA should have supported what you would deem a "common sense gun control" measure and did not, but it's possible that situation would arise. I think it's less common in the Trump era, actually, because Trump is probably less diehard about gun control than other conservatives, and I think the NRA may be inclined to go along with Trump.
- I don't think the NRA has "blood on its hands" or whatever they're accused of. That's why I say things like "criticism is over the top." It's an organization largely devoted, at least recently, to the status quo. I'm sure some people think that's murderous or whatever, I don't, and I think those claims are pretty stupid.
