..he bought the weapon at a Gun fayre, they said it was legal but I really don’t know.

Unlicenced people can sell long guns to anyone under federal law. For example let's say I wanted to sell a long gun that I didn't want anymore. I post the sale on Craigslist. I can sell it to anyone and they are legally purchasing it.

From what I've read you are correct. There is no age limit for buying a rifle or shotgun from a private, unregistered seller - this includes gun fairs. The whole situation over there is insane.

Let me be a little clearer about licenced.

A licensed gun dealer can't sell to anyone. 18 for long guns and 21 for hand guns.

A private sale does not follow these laws.

This is true. But the amount of non-FFLs at gun shows is very small, and very likely, the guy at issue (if the claimed video is accurate) would need to be an FFL by law.

Of course, there are about 10 states I recall that regulate private sales as well.

As noted above, the huge majority of sellers at gun shows are licensed and therefore conduct background checks. Theoretically, ilikecheese selling his gun to a neighbor or guy off craigslist would be an exception, and someone could do that at a gun show. But nearly all of the sellers at gun shows make a business of it, they're not one-off sellers, and would therefore be breaking the law by not conducting licensed sales.

The students denied making the threat. “The parents assured the deputies the students had no access to firearms.”

Later that same day, deputies returned to the Leonardtown home where the 15 year old suspect lives with a search and seizure warrant. Inside the home, investigators found 39 unsecured firearms, including handguns in the nightstands of both the 15 year old suspect and his 14 year old brother. David William Fairfax, the father of the suspect, was arrested and charged with two counts of reckless endangerment, one count of access to a firearm by a minor and one count of illegal transfer of a firearm.

The issue is ,though, that if you are not a registered seller of firearms you can sell at a gun show - or anywhere - with no age restriction on the purchaser. They could at least make gun fairs for licensed sellers only.
