I think if someone is hellbent on killing people they're going to do it by any means they can, if they can't get hold of a gun, they use knives, bombs, incendiary devices, or whatever they can get their mucky hands on. Yes, guns have a devastating effect due to the large casualty count. If this lunatic decided to go on a killing spree with a knife, and was stopped after killing just one person, that's still one too may. Sadly, there are many problems in this world and we only sit up and take notice when there's a high body count.

Difference is, you can't really kill 50 people quickly with a knife. Nor can you easily obtain and build explosive devices - only one major incident in recent memory is Timothy McVeigh in 1995.

Whereas guns, including assault weapons, are given out like candy over there.

Nobody is saying you can get rid of every kind of murder out there by banning everything with a pointy edge and so on - it's not a nanny state argument. What people are saying is that there is little to no need for every citizen of a country to be armed to the teeth.

America is at best pitied or openly laughed at for their ridiculous stance on this. And so they should be.

No I totally agree Tubey. The point I was trying to make is that there are many ways to kill man any people. America does need to lay down its guns but it's who's going to go first.

It's not that difficult - make firearms illegal. Police keep them. That way, walking around with a gun, going into a shop to buy one off the rack... these things go away immediately.

Yes, guns will still be underground in America, but the problem is these atrocities are committed usually by people who weren't criminals in the first place. If the means to buy them is less obvious, normal people having a meltdown will eventually struggle to get access to them, as is the case in the UK.

It's a domestic terrorist. The reason for his actions will be ISIS, but the means to do so is an American problem.

Ideology matters.

The fact that a violent hatefilled muslim death cult is spreading and gaining recruits across the world is a massive issue.

The fact those recruits are also successful at killing people in large numbers without being stopped is also an issue.

Islam has a violence problem. And as a result the rest of us have an islam problem.

Right, sure. That's fine. It still has nothing to do with the fact a US citizen did this and probably did so with legal firearms, which is what the thread itself is about.

Every mass murderer by definition has a twisted ideology; it's not unique to ISIS. See McVeigh for details.

It's not. And when that ideology was anti abortion, people blamed the over top rhetoric of pro life idealogues, when it was anti women people blamed the misogynistic websites he frequenced, when it was anti islamic peopled blamed islamiphobis from politicians, when it was racist, people blamed the glorification of the csa.

Hate breeds murderers. Murderers then breed copy cat murders.

Isis have explicitly labeled gay people as deserving of death and have had any homosexuals they've captured stoned to death. A muslim man who believes in their cause has then shot 50 gay men and women because they were gay.

Muslim preachers routinely deliver anti gay speaches and emphasis the duty of jihad against enemies of islam. This has not happened in a vaccum. This has happened after 15 years of almost daily mass murders by islamists.
