The second amendment needs to be repealed but there is zero chance of that happening.

Even if that happened tomorrow, what would it accomplish? 300+ million guns and itchy trigger fingers aren't just going to disappear, and most of those who own them do so precisely because they fear some day someone will try to collect them.

Americans have to be dealt with like North Korea these days - calmly, respectfully, and above all, with no sudden moves. It is a country imbued with latent fascism and/or civil war.

The issue is not the 2nd Amendment, it's the NRA, which effectively blocks every sort of "anti gun" action.

The NRA is powerful because millions of people support it. There's the law, and then there's widespread gun possession, which, as the saying goes, is nine-tenths of the law. I completely agree that this is a major problem, but I'm not sure what legislation can do to reverse the reality of mass automatic weapon-ownership. You've probably looked at this much more closely than I have, but it seems to me like the culture would need to change dramatically first - only every day, it moves in the opposite direction.

How did he get those weapons? I understand that a lot of guns are legal in America, but automatic ones are illegal. Lots of questions to be answered.

Before that, Columbine. Hard to tell whether Pearl Jam was prescient or potentially instigatory. Before that, the President was shot from close range. And that's just since I've been alive. There's no political will to move this along (except from small, fractured and radical positions), and there's no rhetoric or conversation for the average American to have.

Lost me there. Did you mean Marilyn Manson?

But you have to start somewhere. At least make it even slightly harder to walk into a hotel with 10 guns and god knows how much ammunition. The alternative is to do nothing and carry on.

fully-automatic weapons are more or less illegal; semi-automatic weapons (like these) are legal and often encouraged
