He's not who I would have picked, but I do think in current circumstances, he was the best option to put up against Trump. He is moderate enough (and old white guy enough) to not scare GOP or right leaning independents and allow them to vote for him when Trump is the alternative.

I don't think Sanders or Warren would have increased the number of progressives enough to overcome the visceral GOP/right Indys reaction to a "socialist" or a "anti-corporation female". I think either would have been too much for even the sane GOPers to stomach.

....well here’s hoping for a Biden victory. I never realised he‘d had such tragedy in his life, losing his first wife and new born daughter in a car accident and a son to cancer.

Constituencies have roughly the same number of voters in them. Hence why they have boundary changes from time to time.
