This was kind of the impression I’ve always gotten from all the British people I’ve ever talked with about it. I’ve heard some people take issues with bureaucratic stuff about the NHS, but the institution itself seems to be almost above reproach, and something Brits are fiercely proud of. Kind of similar to how the military is viewed here.
Well, "proud" is a bit of a stretch. I mean you guys will be proud of the people who work in your system; same as us here. I mean the Tories, who are as close to anti-NHS as you can get, have won election after election lately, so the NHS isn't the fierce electoral hot button topic it once was, due to widespread understanding that the thing isn't perfect.
It's more that we take it for granted because it's common sense that healthcare should be free at the point of access when needed. Like a basic human right. For us, we find your system totally demented.
