Team that finished 4th VS Current Team

The squad of 07-08 was much better than this one. We had Lescott, Arteta, an in form Yak, an in form Osman and an in form Pienaar. We had strength in numbers too. Baines was warming the bench most games ffs and Yak barely played in the group stages of the Uefa Cup. You can't underestimate how important having a 20 goal a season striker and Johnson coming off the bench and slotting consistently was. This year we have Naismith, Barkley, Oviedo and Hitzlsperger on the bench. It's not even close. Our first XI is good. It's never available though.

I agree. That team/squad was the best of the Moyes era for me.

first 1 easy coz it got 4th... says it all about that quality.... no doubt this season we ahve better potential but these boys have to do a bit more to top tht season

If the 04 team played the 012-13 squad 10 times I would expect this years team would thrash the 04 team a couple times with 4-0, 5-1 like scorelines and yet somehow manage to lose the overall series to the 04 team.

haha, this team hasn't managed to do that against anyone inside the top 3 divisions

Agreed mate, I loved that season, we were really entertaining to watch. It was great that we actually handed out a few thrashings, 7-1 vs Sunderland and 6-1 vs SK Brann and that Osman goal vs Larissa is still my favourite ever Everton goal. We were actually proper boss that season.

Martyn > Howard
Coleman > Hibbert
Jagielka > Weir
Distin > Stubbs
Baines > Naysmith
Arteta > Mirallas
Gibson > Carsley
Gravesen > Osman
Pienaar > Kilbane
Cahill > Fellaini
Bent > Jelavic

Just my opinion on who was better than who comparing this seasons players to the 2004-05 season players.

07-08 was the best of the Moyes teams. By the group stages we were just playing some sick stuff in the prem and in Europe. Pity that they appeared (at least to me) so cocky heading into the match at Fiorentina. Talent-wise I thought we were the best team left in the round of 16. We should have won that thing.

65 points, a carling cup semi (deserved to win at the Bridge, Lescott's header still makes me fume) and last 16 of the Uefa Cup (should have been more) was an excellent haul. Good few thrashings handed out as well, as you say. Think we went 15 games unbeaten at one point as well, which only ended at OT. Bloody brilliant season.

Didn't that team get 4th with 61 points? We'll get more than that this season IMO but 61 certainly won't be enough.

Exactly. forth year happened mainly because of the rest imploding than us being boss. that weekend when we drew with Birmingham being a
Great example

Plus I'm sure McFadden had the chance to square it to Cahill who would've had a tap in but decided to shoot and miss it of course. Could've been other way round

We didn't know what we had in Baines, I wonder what the team would have looked like if Lescott was placed at RB and Baines at LB. Lescott was so good at defending the flanks that we could have floated osman anywhere on the pitch and Baines could have prevented teams from targeting Arteta on the other side.

The 07/08 team won a lot of games 1-0 & seldom gave away silly points kept more clean sheets & did we not take 4 points off the rezzies too? it was a more solid defensive team & more ruthless, but the football we played early on this season was more entertaing & the games we flumped have cost us as we could have been 3rd by now - the clean sheet record is very poor too!

Right now we are on 55 points with 18 left to play for. GD +15. 05 team finished on 61 points with -1 GD.

This team is comfortably better than that one, it's just the top end of the league is also far better than then.

in agreement that 07-08 was the best team, played some great football, defense was solid as a rock and we had a consistent goal threat with yak, cahill and arteta on the pitch, plus we were more likely to score from set pieces. we also had a lot more options than the current side. if moyes needed a goal he could bring on AJ, McFadden, Vaughan (if he was fit) or a fresh faced Anichebe. Now we don't really have a plan B

what a year for signings 07-8 was as well; Yak, Baines, Jags. Jeez that's over 20mil where did we get the money haha. if only we'd got Fernandes as well

12-13 > 04-05 by a fair bit.

07-08 team had a much stronger attack. Add Lescott, Arteta and an arsed Yakubu to our current side and we'd be laughing. As would the Yak, probably.

I too believe the 07/08 team to be the best side Moyes has assembled and I do feel that we should have won the UEFA Cup that season. Fiorentina Away game ranks up there with the Wigan FA Cup match for throwing away a gilt edged chance of a trophy.

I think Mirallas and Fellaini are two of the most special talents we have had in his time though, so perhaps that is why he speaks so highly of this current team. But the squad depth and the opportunity to change the game from the bench just isn't there. Taking Mirallas off for Naismith just isn't the same as Yakubu for AJ.
