Mirallas--Gibson/Arteta--Fellaini--Pienaar

That team would be boss.

04/05 side was charmed, we avoided injuries like no season I can recall.
On top of which Real Madrid came in and offered cash money dollars and cents for a player with 5 months left on his contract - not one of these spiceboy run a contract down and move to the sunny plateaus of spain types but a move for a player they wanted and would play.
Gravesen was a demon on heat for that campaign, played some of the best CM football we have ever seen in the Prem years there, and Marcus Bent ran himself through 5 grand nationals every game for us. Damn it was so good and it did us proud and I cant believe it was almost ten years ago.

Everton - putting years on you.

In fairness only reason we finished 4th was it was a crap league that year, Liverpool finished behind us by some margin and I'd say it'd be the lowest points needed to get 4th in PL history? I mean still a magnificent feat with the team we had and after all the crap that happened in the summer, but that many points would only get us mid table this season.

Still a really exciting season though, Marcus Bent would run all day, Carsley player of the year and Real Madrid signing the wrong baldy.

61 points is enough for top 6 most years mate.

We had the same ammount of points the 4th season as two years back when we finished 8th.

Yeah true enough. From memory it was a season where every team was beating eachother, we got a lot of decent gritty 1 nil wins on the trot before xmas and fell away at the end of the season but nobody could catch us, Liverpool were having a shocker, they had one of the better squads in recent times from memory. The fact that you need more points for 4th these days shows how poorer a lot of the teams are in this league now, you've got to be extraordinarily poor to get relegated now.

If I remember rightly that was the season we had Marcus Bent up front and David Weir captaining the side. When you look at the quality of players we had in that season compared to who we might have up front on Sunday it really hammers home what the difference is between that season around 2004-2005 and this season in 2013.

We were odds on to go down that year. Even 6th would have been a hell of an achievment with that squad.

Definitely better footballers in this current team Browns. Sadly everyone else has not only caught up, but moved on, mostly due to having more cash than us. 2004 was before Spurs, Villa, City cash injections. Totally understandable why we haven't kicked on in some ways.
Out of the 04 team, I'd take Carsley, Arteta, Martyn and Yobo at their best and slot them in ahead of Gibson, Osman, Howard and Distin, otherwise we're a lot stronger I reckon.

If you look at it we only signed three players in the summer of '04, that would be quite significant even now.

We're going to need to sign at least 3 players in the summer too, a couple of players getting on now that need replacing, plus a small squad. We'll lose players too though, so we'll be stuck in the same situation. As long as we sign a few more players with ball skills and the odd stepover I'll be content.

I know some hearts sank with that comment...

It's depressing but if you're my age or younger it is.

In terms of talent rather than achievement, anyway. We only need 14 points from our last eight games, (which would be in keeping with our form this season, we've earned on average 1.7 points a game so far which would do it) to rack up our highest points total since 88.

The 95 cup winning team, the 05 Cl team and the mikel, tim, yak team from the uefa run and fa cup final years will always have my heart, but week in week out in the league this team is better than all of them.

The fact it will achieve nothing at all, is down to the manager.

As far as myself, I think this side isn't as good as the general consensus is at times but the players themselves are better than they think they are and can play better than Moyes will let them play...partially due to his own need to play with defensive responsibilities always niggling the back of their mind and the worry of a light squad. They're both valid points, in their own way, but it hampers this side, IMHO.

Got to say sadly being fairly young this definately is the best team I've ever seen, was born 2 months after the 95 cup win so can't really bask in the glory day sadly. As said by Arteta above, that 05 team still does have a place up there though. Still depresses me that I've never seen us win a cup In my life time, maybe one day soon I can know the glory feeling.
