The argument however, is he’s now playing in a much much better side, with a much higher level of chance creation, and has looked terrible.

Hardly got a run of games at Chelsea which is important for any no.9 to play well, not to mention new signings. And Chelsea has been a circus as well, different 11s game to game. Would hate to be an attacker for them, how would you go about developing any relationships, any rhythm to your play, any patterns?

He was delusional going there.

From a pure numbers perspective, 12 in 37 for a p crap Ipswich side is good.

From an eye test perspective, I thought he looked good at Ipswich and was worth the £30m. He works both centre halves, has good hold up play and runs the channels, and has decent movement in the box, everything you need from a number 9.

This year he's been very underwhelming but hard to judge. For attacking players rhythm is everything; knowing where your team mates are, where you need to be and so on, but he's hardly been able to put together a run of games. The decision to go to Chelsea was delusional, which possibly counts against him but a lot would rest on the background check, players attitude, and so on.

If it's £30m I think I'd be happy with him as a signing. Anything higher and I'd swerve

I wouldnt pay £30mil for him.

It's similar to KDH in the sense that (ignoring ability) he'd be unwanted at Chelsea.

Why should we give them their money back? If we were to sign him i'd expect £25mil to be the fairer amount to pay.

The issue is that he's high energy and a bit of a brute like Beto. We could do with one player like that and another who is a bit cuter.

Because despite everything, I still think he'll be a better player than he was a year ago, but we'd get him for the same price. On the face of it I think £30m would be good business personally, but that's my opinion and you'll have yours. As I said on another post, a lot would depend on the background check, however. What's his attitude like, how committed is he, what does he think he's learnt from the year at them, and so on. Makes all the difference to whether £30m is a goer or not imo

I agree re: the Beto point, though. Both are battering rams, someone with a bit more guile would also be needed

….only watched a couple of highlights from last nights game and what struck me from the ‘pre-match handshake’ routine was how much smaller PSG were than RS. Maybe size isn’t everything when it comes to footballers.

Hit the nail on the head there. At the end of the day the game is FOOTBALL so foot and ball, it's fundamentally about what you do with the ball at your feet. Sometimes in the PL it's like we think it's called runball or athleticball and forget the other bit.

Yeah I thought the same when I saw Vitinha and Neves against Szobozslai and Gravenberch… and then the game started and the PSG guys moved through that midfield like something from the Matrix, defying time, space and longer legs!

At one point, after Neves had spun, weaved and feinted from side to side, Szobozslai’s legs seemed to run off in different directions and he just fell over - and in that moment, the beautiful game was never more beautiful!

If we had signed him last summer for £30 mil and he posted the same stats as now , plus his injuries etc , do you think we could get anywhere near what we paid for him to sell now ?
I dont , nowhere near it tbh.

Linked by 'the hard tackle' :o
Let’s not speculate what you need to google to find an article about a teenage boy from a publication called “hard tackle”, we’re better than that.

Don't know, probably not, but the circumstances would be different wouldn't they.

This year he's featured in Champions League games for a start, has been training with some world class players at elite facilities and, until December, was being coached by (in my opinion) an elite manager.

Equally, he's been in and out of an unstable team at a bit of a circus, not been given a solid run of games. If we'd signed him last summer he'd start every game he's fit, and would probably have bagged way more goals.

So I don't think the hypothetical scenario of him being bought and sold by Everton this season is comparable.

You have to be absolutely exceptional technically when you are a smaller player though. Bernardo Silva, Foden etc are fine but if you have average ability then you’ll be bullied in the Prem.
