I think the signing of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, together with the club's recent social media promotion of Garner as a deep-lying playmaker, puts the question of signing Douglas Luiz to bed.

My theory is that they were ready to sign Luiz as a defensive midfielder who could control the tempo of the game, and had a plan for the players who would fit tactically. Given the nature of Everton's new analytics-driven scouting, the profile of players they're after probably shifts depending on other acquisitions, so that signing Luiz would mean a tactical shift in this direction that might favor these targets (e.g., Kubo), but signing a box-to-box midfielder instead means a shift that favors another set of targets (e.g., Dibling).

I think the stalled negotiation with Juventus is a big part of what Moyes was referencing when he said he'd expected some deals to be done already, and if Juventus and Joorabchian hadn't tried playing hard ball, they could have been rid of the player and acquired Hjulmand by now, and we'd have progressed on a number of other deals.

But in the interests of completeness, here's the latest club nonsense from Juventus via Gianni Balzarini:

"About Douglas Luiz. Now we understand what the situation is, right? Aside from the issue of his value—and we're still talking about €40 million with an offer of €35 million—Nottingham Forest's official offer will be made within a few days, I can't say tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, etc. We'll find out if Sangaré is also included in this offer or if these are two separate situations, or if Sangaré will never join Juventus."

In other words, Forest is still not meeting their valuation, like Everton before them, but they're confident a deal will be reached … sometime, just as with Everton before them. And it may include another player … or not.

Now Juventus are stuck dragging out the notion of advanced talks and multi-club interest (Everton are still in it, they claim) in the hopes of getting someone else to bite on Luiz. When Everton were the front runners, West Ham and others were supposedly close behind, and now that Forest is supposedly in the lead, Everton are still close.

Nico Gonzalez played well in a 4-2-3-1 in his last season with Fiorentina, and that's with pretty paltry support behind him. if he gets good service from our midfield, i'm confident he'd be a very solid goal contributor - really solid with his headers and has a nose for the goal.

word on the street is Juve hasn't used him properly, so maybe a loan with buy options would be something we could entertain
