Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

What if we sign two CMs that each tackle half as much
I like your thinking...

He’s pretty much irreplaceable at the moment.

Losing the best tackling player in the league would hit us hard.
A few players who make a lot of tackles at some of the relegated clubs.

That Mateus Fernandes at Saints is only 20 years old but made 89 (13th overall).

Ndidi on 85 tackles.

Every other team in the league seems to be able to function without him. No player in our team is irreplaceable. I think he’s been our player of the season but whether he stays or goes we need to be buying his replacement this summer, because he’s 36.
The other teams who have squads of a similar standard have all conceded way more goals, and Idrissa is a massive part of that. They are exposed through the middle and that leaves the back 4 exposed. The danger of not having Gueye is that we have to play like we did under Ancelotti and drop onto our own six yard line to avoid being exposed. It's amazing that one player can make such a difference, but he does. There may well be a younger version out there, but if there is they are likely to cost about £50 million and unlikely to come to us.

Still way down on Gueye though.

As an aside. Fernandes is a very good player who I wouldn’t mind us going after
They are. But Fernandes for example is only 20 and first season in the league and can be further developed. And if the players around are improved from players who turn over possession repeatedly (Doucs, Harrison, Beto) then hopefully we don’t need as much tackling.

There seems to be plenty of movement already by other clubs… normally you’re not bothered until say end of June but given what we need to do we need to get to it

For the interest

Worth repeating we really probably won't do much until the psr window closes at the end of the month. Hopefully they can get things lined up before then, but I wouldn't expect to see anything publicly til then.

Why? He didn’t cost £50m on either of the two occasions we signed him.

What do you propose we do as the alternative? Tie him down and force him to sign a lifetime contract so he can never retire?

Good point 😆 but we need to buy so many players this year, be good if we didn't have to replace a first teamer this year

We realistically can’t be flogging a 36 year old to death either. We should be able to manage his minutes next season to get the best out of him, it is not going to end well if we’re flogging him and asking him to do 90 minutes at his age every week.
