I think you can tell a lot about character in these kind of decisions. Does Delap have the genuine belief,in himself, and desire to take on a “project” like Everton and really become a legend. But then possibly have to deal with the risk that it may not work out.Or does he sit on a bench somewhere, for one of the 6, but then have all the media telling everyone how good he is without necessarily needing to prove anything. I refuse to believe Mason Mount would have one single England cap if he hadn’t played for Chelsea and Man Utd.
I think young players at the top level have the belief that they’re the best and can play at the biggest clubs/champions league etc. if that happened then international recognition follows.
Moves to Chelsea/newcastle and has a crack at champions league on probably higher wages that we’d offer. If he doesn’t get chances / it doesn’t work out then he moves to a club like Everton.
Moves to Utd he’s in the spotlight at one of the world’s biggest clubs. it doesn’t work out then he moves to a club like Everton.
Moves to Everton. If it works out playing for the best fans and at the best stadium etc then he can look to move to a champions league club (which he already can).
If it doesn’t then he doesn’t get to move to a higher standard/champions league etc.
Lots of players use clubs as stepping stones whereas he arguably doesn’t need to. Don’t get me wrong it would be (imo) the best move for him to develop himself, but as I said at the start, a lot of players will think they’re already the best and will be able to prove themselves.
