Seen the narrative starting to emerge of if we pay what said ts want for Dibling then that could mean we don't strengthen at RB or CM - so is it wiser to drop down to a lower more affordable target, Boyland suggested this yesterday as one idea.
Thing is though - whose to say we do that and don't get the other ones in anyways.
False economy, you choose your target and unless they aren't attainable - then you should go get them, even if you have to pay more than you'd like to do. Dibling is obviously valued by the club as a player who can go to be worth 100m etc so it's the club now thinking about a lower future profit making them hesitate.
TFG and more importantly the recruitment team put together by them which are under the spotlight right now. Forest and Sunderland business are casting a light on our apparent unprecedented summer and as it stands we've added a few decent t signings with potential a solid player in KDH and a high profile lauded loan deal - but end of the day it's a loan and in twelve months he's gone - so hard to include him in the view of have we rebuilt to the degree needed.
If Barry ends up our big transfer - one surpassed by around 4-5 signings from forest then ultimately we have sold a lie about the degree of rebuild. And it seems more like a typical Everton type summer.
If we do not get a genuinely good right winger in then they've dropped the ball big time, maybe hiring a guy known for being a hard nose haggler over pennies as the head of recruitment isn't the smartest idea in the current climate of football deals.
But at least he can say he never wasted any money on overpriced deals, be sure he won't have made them.
I actually agree with all of this, and it underpins a lot of my frustrations.
On Hammond, this is always part of the problem when you essentially break the role of DOF up. If you give a guy a job to negotiate the cheapest deals, that's what he will do. I've worked with loads of people who just don't see the bigger picture. They do their job, as set out.
The other big red flag for me, was Kinnear and Hammond telling everyone prices would go down in August. I don't know what that was based on. I think the opposite. I do wonder now, if we have some alternatives to
Dibling, that may have been say 20m but the season has started, and they've seen us bid 40m for
Dibling and are just quoting us that.
I'm not going to be completely unreasonable.
KDH, Barry and
Aznou seem like good buys and
Grealish too. And in a "normal" summer it would have been good, but not when you've lost 10 players or whatever.
