Summer Transfer Window 2017

I understand why people rate him, he's had an awful lot of work to do this season and I think it's easy to look good when you have loads of shots to save - people aren't going to blame him for them getting beat every week as they're awful.

The bigger thing for me is to look at the other aspects of his game because he wouldn't be facing as many shots for us. What's his decision-making like? How is his concentration? How good is he at claiming crosses? Etc etc etc

Just think the jury is out at the moment. There are loads of examples of keepers at the bottom end of the league who have looked good because of the amount of work they've been required to do but have turned out to not be all that special when you take them out of that environment. David Marshall is the last one I can remember who people were falling over themselves saying we should buy.
The problem we have as a club though is that once it is plain that a player is definitely the real deal then we, typically, lose out to clubs with more recent success. So we either but highly rated younger players who, as you say, may fail or resign ourselves to shopping for players below the very highest level. I think £17m in today's crazy market for a player who could be our keeper for a decade is a risk worth taking.

We cant still be going for potential. We need tried and tested and top class.
Do you mean in general or specifically for a GK? I can understand the argument for an experienced keeper as they tend to hit their peak later than players in other positions but we need players in so many positions that, for me at least, a mixture of top class signings and promising youngsters seems like a sensible strategy. I quite like the look of Pickford but it is a risk. If that risk pays off though then you have a stable number one for 10 years.

Why not? We are considerably better than them and can pay over the odds if needed.

As soon as we flash a bit of skirt at him I could see him wanting the move too.
Think they delusionally think we are their immediate rivals.
Agree he would be a great signing ( Moyes should have done it a few years ago) but I cant see them setting any sort of price for us.

Don't like Hart. Decent [Poor language removed] stopper but terrible distribution and woeful judgement.

We need a keeper with distribution skills and speed and judgement of his line. It can make a massive difference to us on the counter attack if we can get a keeper that can kick the ball to Lukuka in the channels and get him one on one with a defender on the break. Speed of the line will also allow us to push a la Spurs/Lloris making a pressing game much more effective

All good in theory but Lukaku rarely runs the channels

If we can't get a player off Stoke then some of the other shouts in this thread are going to lead to to huge disappointment.

All moot anyway I guess. All clues point to Pickford.

Pickford is a good keeper. I'd still want another, slightly older keeper for him to battle it out with

The problem with Stoke isn't the club itself (although the sight of their fans on SSN transfer deadline day is enough to bring up your dinner) The problem is Hughes and his inflated sense of self importance. Ever since the Lescott saga when he was at City he's had an issue with us - maybe someone can enlighten me why but if anyone stops us from signing Stoke players (for the record i wouldn't want any anyway) it'll be him.

Aye...wont be unhappy with Pickford.
He was very well thought of coming up through the ranks , maybe its about the right time to sign him.
Time will tell I suppose , could just be great for us for the next 10 years.

For whatever it's worth, remember when Rom spouted off about us not getting players in that we could have that were doing well in the prem?

I reckon he was on about Arnautovic.

I reckon we could do worse than Pickford. Just wouldn't be my number one pick by quite a lot.

i read that too. Arnautovic reminds me of Mirallas with dashes of Geri thrown in for good measure. Very talented but frustrating as hell. I don't think he's any better than what we had/have.

Saw Chelsea may shop Willian..... That would be an excellent signing....

Heck sign him and that Willian Jose (to back up Rom - not replace him) - just sign all the Brazilian Willian's...
