Summer Transfer Window 2017

@Lanolin @bullybeef

Yeh understood. Think this summer will show if he's doing that or not. I mean potentially it's just a case of him not necessarily having to with the increase in transfer budget? Although if Elstone was being sincere saying we're still going to look for value then we should bring in cheaper, "random" players with potential alongside the big obvious targets.

I'd like to say I'm hopeful but I think it will be all obvious targets and maybe some kids for the academy.

We're in a different place now though...certainly than we were when going for Martyn. We've just taken two chances on GKs and they didn't come off. I'd take a GK from the Bundesliga before I'd take any from this league apart from Schmeichael, De Gea, Courtois.

I dont do this much, and i havent seen enough of Pickford to make a informed decision of if he is going to be great or not... But, I am going to agree with Dave here (sweet jesus), I would be looking at the likes of Leno, and Horn (not just for his name) before Pickford.

That said, i still wouldn't touch kasper schmeichel with a barge pole.

I understand what you were saying fella and you make a very valid point.

I think the point our comrade was making is that the players we are being heavily linked with are blindingly obvious and ones that my 11 year old son could have identified.

Just what is Mr Walsh getting paid for?
He is getting paid to be DoF. One of his responsibilities is to oversee the recruitment of players throughout the club. Is it not possible, if we do sign Pickford, that having crunched through all the reports and recommendations that have landed on his desk via the team of scouts who work under him, that Pickford represents the best chance of success for money spent.?

Possibly but it's not just about Pickford.

All due respect to above posters but isn't the point of left field signings to be just that? Unknown of, out of the blue deals?

The whole concept of it removes links and public knowledge. The fact that we aren't linked with small names is a good sign that the papers are making assumptions purely based on financial prowess and positional weakness.

To be fair, Walsh isn't here to simply uncover unknowns

He is here to help get the right players

Sometimes we'll know them well, other times we'll be less familiar. Sometimes they'll cost loads, other times we may get a bargain

Not worried that he thinks Sigurdsson, Rooney and Pickford fit the bill.

And all due respect to you, but I've already clarified what I meant by left field.

I'm not saying Walsh isn't doing a good job, or that these signings wouldn't be the right ones. What I'm saying is that I would expect any decent manager to have been able to identify the players I mentioned, same as I would have expected them to identify Bolasie, Schneiderlin, Valencia, Williams etc. I'm therefore pointing out that paying both Koeman AND Walsh large amounts of money would seem rather unnecessary if we don't also bring in more players in the sort of bracket I mentioned.

Pickford is and will turn into one of the best keepers in the league. Hes at the stage now were say Butland was before he moved from to Stoke.

Would be up therewith Heaton as my choice. Certainly more value in him then Heaton.

I actually think the club will have learnt from the mistakes of last season and actually get some of our deals done relatively quickly especially with the EL early rounds. Hopefully Lukaku's comment on ambition hit the board/Moshiri and with Koeman likely to push for money to spend we get our act together.

Get the dross off the books asap, offer Rom a new deal again, if he still refuses get shot for anything north of £80 million and start bringing in the New players to bed into the squad for pre season. None of this last day crap.

Based on recent trends, and not just since Koeman/Walsh, we seem to make the majority of our signings domestically.

It was certainly an issue last summer, getting knocked back for every continental player we made an approach for.

I am not one of those who automatically thinks that an exotic/unknown name = better player, very often its the opposite but I agree with @Lanolin with regard to left-field signings, particularly as we are short in numbers and generally there is better value abroad.

I do think that a part of the Director of Football role is to scour each and every market for signings, so we have to extend our reach and pull signings off from outside the UK. You can say much the same for every club, but somehow I think this is more of an issue with us than some of the peer clubs we'd like to emulate. We simply have to make our budget stretch without compromising too much. That is the nub of the task.

Playing in Europe will help, but not to the degree some anticipate. I don't think either Walsh or Koeman were culpable for last summer's disappointments, but collectively with the board, they will be if we fail this summer. Most particularly Walsh, as his whole role is geared towards recruitment.

Leno is a FAR better keeper for roughly the same money and same age. Don't understand the 'they play in England so that's what we want!' mentality here. Keeper has to be one of the easiest transitions between leagues for any position on the pitch.

Koemans a cautious type and former defender and I guessing if they settle on a young keeper for reasonably big money it won't be because he is English or plays in England, it will be because he sees him as a reliable number one right now with potential to get even better.

Just a thought, as to be honest ive no real clue on keepers right now apart from not wanting the England's No1 over rated sideshow that is Joe Hart.
