Summer spending....

We didn't spend as much money as some worse teams because we already have the types of players they are looking for. Keep fellaini and baines, replace heitinga, and we have a stronger team than last year who barely missed top four.

If they are signing the types of players that we already have, then shouldn't we be worried that they're going to catch us up whilst we stand still?

Doesn't really work that, does it?

We still have to strengthen, it's not like we are Barcelona or anything.

If you do not look to improve each season you are failing.

Because the wage bills already existed before the new money came in. Everton's wage bill is slightly higher than these clubs - as is our turnover and prize money.

Maybe think before posting.

The wage bills in question are less than half ours at the last recorded accounts, so therefore they have a greater scope to increase total player expenditure (wages & fees) than we have, as they're relative newcomers to the division.

Your assumption that they're spending NEXT YEARS TV revenue in advance is just that - an assumption. They're probably merely spending this years imo, as it's largely incremental to their previous budgets (Swansea had a negative net spend last season btw)

Even if they were spending next years incremental TV revenue, I thought the fact that we've done exactly that in previous years was something that was considered to be awful business like? Or have I missed something?

I get your point but at the same time.

Dortmunds Total Squad Cost (last year) - £36m

EDIT - My point being I would much prefer for us to do a Dortmund...

Does this not show there is at least a way into the Champions League for a club like us. Smart player trading and development is a tangible path to success and one I believe Everton have been paving over the past 5 years. I don't necessarily believe Moyes was the man to get the best out of that model completely as he was to scared to take risks for long termism. Martinez is that man mark my words- or just bookmark this post.

Dortmund had a league with 3 CL spots and only one club who could outspend the rest of the league in Bayern. This has given them regular access to CL spots AND the ability to attract players.

We have a league with 4 CL spots but with 5 teams who can outspend us by over £100m a year and another 2-3 who can spend £50m or so more than us.

Take Chelsea and Manchester City out the league and we'd have finished in CL spots numerous times in Moyes time in charge. However we can't take them out the league.

I wonder what Martinez has done in his career for you to have so much faith that he'll outperform Moyes. He didn't even outperform Norwich, Swansea or WBA with Wigan on similar budgets so why should he outperform Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool on ours?

The huge jump in net spend (as you point out yourself) demonstrates that these clubs are spending the forthcoming massive increase in television money, i think that stands to reason. Our existing wage budget would not (or at least should not) have been created with such an unprecedented rise in TV money in mind. Our scope for summer player investment should therfore be the equal to these clubs.

It demonstrates nothing of the sort, as the cash is 12 months off landing for a start, so IF they are spending it in advance then they're accruing debt as it stands.

We could (funding allowing) spend our £25m+ windfall 12 months in advance, but where's the benefit in doing that? I don't understand the clamour to spend future years revenue when the criticism for doing exactly the same in years gone by was deafening?

Our wage bill is way higher than the likes of Norwich, Southampton etc.

Maybe you should take some of your own advice.

You said our wage bill is irrelevant to our transfer budget. That's one of the most downright stupid statements I've ever seen on this site, yet you have the nerve to tell me to think before posting.

Whatever ....

who are those 8 teams?
(assuming you're talking about net spend as when a team receives 50m for a player... they tend to be able to spend 50m)

The budget at Wigan is virtually non existent and relied on a big sale every year and what Dave Whelan could come up with. It was considerably less than the money available at Norwich, West Brom or Swansea.

as ive said before , a lot of those teams spending big are lower league squads on lower league wages now earning premier league money so have scope for growth.
other teams (top 7) have money to spend due to there fanbase , merchandising and success (spurs utd liverpool) or sugar daddies (city chelsea)

the team comparable with us is villa , and they are outspending us clearly.
sunderland is the one team i feel are taking a huge gamble with there transfer amount.
arsenal are so underspending its untrue.
man city are just silly and vulgar.
