Can’t remember much about Howard. Would have to check but always consider the Cameron government to be pretty right wing regardless.
When Cameron was electioneering the Tories had suffered 3 defeats, two of them massive, and had shed a lot of the fossils who had ruined the country in the 80s. Cameron himself was young, vaguely photogenic (or at least wasn't William Hague) and not afraid of being on TV. He espoused 'compassionate conservatism' that involved hugging a hoodie or whatever.
Even with a friendly face and Brown being very unpopular (having presided over the not-his-fault financial crash and then being caught accurately calling someone a bigot) Cameron could only manage a coalition victory, but that was enough to sneak in by back door, like an Etonian might sneak his penis into a dead pig's mouth.
Of course when the Tories got into power they declared there was no money (off the back of note left by Labour) and implemented austerity, which is a fancy word for stripping public services away from the neediest. When that ploy was used up Cameron dug into the Euroscepticism civil war well, but had no actual battle plan and lost in the first and second skirmishes before waltzing away, leaving the nation up Theresa's Crack, I mean Creek, without a paddle.
And that was the
good part of the Tory's 13 years in power.
After that we had Theresa 'Indicative votes' and 'Please let me pass a bill and I promise I'll quit' May, who led to 'I'm not even going to come up with a nickname because you'll all have your own favourite' Johnson.
And from there Truss, and Sunak. There's plenty to be said but I'm sure at this point we remember the highlights.
