Succession Planning - Managerial Wishlist

Attracting is one thing, but I think we need to consider the profile we need. Ancelotti and Mourhino are out for me. Even at clubs with huge resources longevity is been key in recent seasons. Look at Klopp and Arteta, they built and needed time. If we've got resources and are serious we need a guy who can build.

I think our biggest miss was Emery, but we'd gotten ourselves into a mess off field by the time he was available so we were Attracting Lampards, Dyches and El Gordos. Timing etc. Even if we'd landed him earlier I'm not sure Moshiri's circus would have served him well.

Whilst I agree, I can’t help but also look at Arteta who has won nothing since the FA cup with Emery’s team. Emery has won nothing at Villa. Klopp won the same number of titles in 10 seasons as Slot did in 1.

Ancelotti the short term pragmatist went back to Madrid and won two CLs. Ten Hag Won a league cup and FA cup at United. Conte goes somewhere wins the title then burns out.

Everyone wants a Guardiola or Ferguson who could build a dynasty of course, but at this point I will take a short term manager who wins a few pots every single day of the week over a long term builder who wins nothing.

We have to end the trophy drought to be considered a credible club again. This situation of being the only major club who doesn’t win trophies, can’t beat their local rivals, and can’t ever win at certain grounds just cannot continue.

We aren't winning much with the current squad. Not even the fast impact managers will do it with this crew. Ancelotti joked about a Ferrari vs a Fiat when he rejoined Madrid...

Again, I'm cautious because of the mess cycling through managers left us in under Moshiri. Conte I'd argue doesn't leave teams good for the long term. I said it another thread, silverware and sustainability aren't mutually exclusive.

Leicester won silverware and no one took them seriously in truth. Look at them now.

Yeah and for every Leicester there’s a Chelsea who have managers like a revolving door under Abramovich and won more than everyone else did.

It’s the risk reward of change in football. Who is to say a top manager couldn’t come in, take Pickford Branthwaite JOB Garner Ndiaye KDH, get something different from Rohl Dibling George and with a couple of their own signings put out a team that could challenge for a CL spot and win one off big games to compete in a cup? What’s the worst that could happen? They crash and burn and we get in a firefighter to keep us in the league and start again.

There’s a risk to doing nothing as well. If Spurs stay up, them Chelsea, Forest, Newcastle, Liverpool and all those other teams who have underperformed this year, they won’t all just say ‘ah yeah we’ll have a year of stability thanks’, they’ll all be trying to get back to the top as soon as possible. That’s what we need to be doing.

I’ve been waiting 31 years, how long exactly should I wait for?

if a top manager became available do you think they’d take us down because we’re not yet stable and the only solution is another year of Moyes? Or would they do what top managers do and get to work taking us up the table?

I didn’t want managerial changes under Kenwright or the end times of Moshiri because there was no point. As long as we were operating a sell to pay debt model we were going nowhere no matter who the manager was. Avoiding relegation whilst waiting for the new stadium and takeover was the name of the game.

Both have happened. What exactly are we waiting for now? Does anyone seriously believe Moyes will take us into CL football next season or win a cup? I don’t. I’d put the chances at almost zero. Get one of those names in and the chances go up a lot.
I think we need to bed in Barry and rohl etc for a couple of years before we can try for Europe. Id aim for a semi final in one of the cups first within 3 years .

Moyes is ideal to keep us ticking over , why risk rushing ?

I feel hes never leaving the nest but we will see

….i wouldn’t be so sure about that if the right job comes along. Keane was full of praise for him, said he’s not dependent on his father. You could see he’d won the respect of the players, they’re the one’s who were so impressed with him in his own right.

I’m reluctant to repeat myself, but football just doesn’t work like that. The idea that losing a semi-final makes you more likely to progress into a final the following season is really, really, absurd.

I’d want to see him in his managerial role first and see how he adapts at that role and away from his father. The history of football is littered with ‘great coaches’ who make poor managers.

Didn't go so well with Botafogo unfortunately

A couple of years before we can try for Europe?

We would have made it this season if we’d have just been a tiny bit bolder at times.

If we move at the pace you’re suggesting we’ll be left behind and that’s how you end up in another relegation battle.
