Roses - not even a debate.

Oasis would have made a nice tribute act for someone. I was a teenager through the '90's and the whole Britpop Blur v. Oasis was nonsense too. They were both overhyped products. Roses were a proper rock band, did their own thing, had their own sound and imploded before they could get stale.

Also, remember Noel and Meg Matthews kissing up to Blair, think they even went to Downing Street once. What's all that about?
Blur (post Brit-pop) became a very good band in my opinion.

I'd take Oasis over the Macc lads in an alehouse battle of the bands but that's about it. Liam used to have good pipes, but the Macc lads had a sense of humour so it's close.

Lol at comparisons to the Stone Roses. Just the wrong tier

Beer and sex and chips and gravy, all a Macc Lad wants.

Sommet like that.

Oasis were a song stealing pub band. The luckiest band that ever lived. Just managed to be in the right time and place. The fact the Gallaghers are multi millionaires still grates on me.
Drunk, lad, pub rock. Music for cretins
I agree with your main point but a lot of bands started in pubs.
I was in Australia in the 70's when AC/DC were playing for free and
couldn't get a gig. INXS did the same. It's the luck of the draw.

If Oasis got back together it would be epic. Its all about when you grew up. I was in my teens in the 90s and although they faded a bit they put out some classic albums. Even some of their b-sides are better than most bands put out. A little mid to the Roses though as they were one of the influences on the Gallagher brothers.

Any U.K. bands or artists you rate from the 90s? I’ll still listen to a fair bit, but it’s mainly American.
My take, Jimmy, is that 'There she goes' by the Las was probably the first 'Indie/Britpop record. And then The Cast, which John Power formed.

Thought 'Love is the law' by the Seahorses was a great number. 'Strap-on Sally chased us down the alley, we feared for our behinds' - Wonderful lyrics!

Never into Blur much at all, although 'Song 5' was decent enough in its originality.

I thought Oasis did some good stuff, although they unashamedly (and honestly) admitted being influenced by The Beatles and Stones. I still love watching their live version of 'Don't look back in anger' at Man City's ground, with Andy Bell on bass.

The Verve were great, in that they appeared to plough their own furrow, and not take much notice of all that was going on around them. Lifting the riff from the orchestral version of the Stones 'The last time' to use in 'Bitter Sweet Symphony', for example (although they got stung because they did not sdeek permission to use it in the first place - now that's rock 'n roll!).

There were many other bands that had single hits and were decent, but faded away - my son's band in the 1990s did 'Saturn 5' by Inspiral Carpets, for example. 'Can you dig it' by The Mock Turtles was another great song by a band that was a one-hit wonder. In the guitar solo middle section, the repeated riff over changing chords is just superb with wah-wah.

So, my views have necessarily been coloured by the songs I heard via my son and daughter in the 1990s, which was a hell of a lot. They, in turn, were picking up on a lot of the 1960s & 1970s stuff that I was still listening to.
