Steven Pienaar

I think Moyes was perfectly suited to getting the most out of limited resources, but if he'd have had a proper striker for more than one* of his eleven seasons I'm sure we'd have finished in the top 4 at least once or twice more.

Not gonna say we'd have won a trophy mind as he'd still likely have bottled the big crunch matches.

*Yakubu's first year.

I agree, he's definitely have kept us from succeeding with the mindset he instilled. But I think he might have got some good players in and built a deeper squad. But ultimately failed. Ironic how so many of us itched for him to kick us on or get someone older in yet we're now arguably waaay worse off.

Pienaar refused to play for us in a Merseyside Derby as he was trying to push a move through to Spurs as he had run down his contract. We got a pittance for him.

Spurs were nowhere near as good as us at the time and their fans hated him, he was routinely booed every time we played them.

I appreciate what he did for us, but he’s been and gone and he shouldn’t be held in such high regard imo

His partnership with Bainesy was something to see... Two players that just fed off each other and made one another infinitely better.

Brilliant player, one of my favourites to have played for Everton - quality, guts, guile and a team player.

What a bunch of players we had alongside Pienaar as well - Cahill, Arteta, peak Baines - we had some proper footballers back then, makes me realise what we're missing now.

Since Stevie Pienaar has just announced his retirement, I thought he deserved his own appreciation thread. Cracking little player, very underrated, and we've had a gaping hole on our left side ever since he left.

All the best to him and let's hope he keeps us entertained on social media and makes a visit or two back to Merseyside.

Never underrated by me. Remember being furious when we messed around sealing his transfer...having a whip-round probably. A player who made others play. Him and Baines were a combo that would have made any team better!

Can't deny Donovan added a lot to our game at the time. Part of it was an actual right sided threat. Which was a rarity under Moyes. We were by and large hugely unbalanced. Osman and Hibbert FFS.

Pienaar and Donovan were both great for us, just wish we could have had them both available for a whole season during that period.

At the risk of revisionism and glossing Moyes's faults, I have to wonder what he'd have been able to do with the funding available now.

..... Probably would have just meant Andy van der Meyde would have cost 30m and Per Kroldrup 40m lol.

Back on topic, good player was Stevie, I wouldn't quite put him in the same category as an Arteta though, or a Cahill. For a period around 2009-10, we had arguably one of the best left-sided attacks in the Premier League with Baines and Pienaar. Happy retirement, Peanuts.

Marcus Bent for £29 million.

Yeah, maybe the past should be left in the past!

True mate two second half of the season appearances but for my money brought our performances on about 15% during his spells.

If i was offered the choice of Pienaar and Donovan it would have been Landon all day.

I'm sure he wasn't half as good the second time round? Quality in the first spell, but I think Pienarr was a better play, Donovan the better athlete.

Meant to quote someone else as well, but I think I would take that entire team over what we have atm, player for player.

would you not want to move clubs for more money and greater chance of success when you are playing under David 'defenders in midfield' Moyes?

The same Spurs who finished top 4 that season?

He was a cracking player, one we have never replaced
