Steven Pienaar

Pienaar was a brilliant little player.

Never a prolific goalscorer but he knitted many a team together.

I can still remember the difference when he was substituted in Martinez's first season in a home game v Norwich.
We had totally dominated for 70 minutes and when he left the field we got pushed onto the back foot for the remainder of the game.

Someone who can give and go with energy and technical accuracy is badly missing from this current team. I guess that was what Klaassen was bought for but he is nowhere near up to speed for this league.

Loved him, truly fantastic player for us overall. Him and Baines on the left were an absolute joy to watch. Never before have I seen two players playing in such unison, it was a thing of beauty. All the best in your retirement Steven.

Ste P'nar P'nar, he pass the ball 13 yards, he's small but he's fu-qin hard, Ste P'nar P'nar

2 things really mar his legacy here, the obvious one and then the "grass is greener" only to come back with his tail between his legs.

Other than that, great little player.

That's the thing with modern footy - probably 75% of players are flawed in some way. Okay most don't end up getting caught battering their wives but whether it's Rooney and his antics or some other snide aspect to their character we are dealing mostly with pampered lads who think the world revolves around them and they generally have the education of an 11 year old.

Plus they will all leave in the end and those that don't - eg Hibbert, Osman and even Jagielka get hammered for staying on too long.

7 and 9 actually and he was more than just numbers, he controlled how we played and everything went through him and Baines.

The icelandic Seb Larson has never and will never do that for us

That just not true, yes we had a very strong left side and they attacked well, but Arteta, Donovan, Fellini etc all had their appexs with us over the period Pienaar was here, he was a very good player for us, but ultimately a mercenary he did us over then came crawling back. No way did he control how we played, he was a decent outlet alright.

Living proof that opta stats are for virgins, Stevie was a good damn terrific footballer who contributed a lot.

Very under rated by the media in this country, and by some of our fans

Stick that in ye pipe @RickyRyder

I disagree there mate. He was an important part of our team of that era that was a solid top 6 standard. Like Cahill - no more, no less. Neither would have got near the mid-80s squad and that for me is the benchmark if you want to use the term "terrific".

Im glad you have seen the error of your ways.

Another facet of Pienaar i didnt particularly like, was he was most effective when he was playing for a contract or a new deal, his first season and the period were he returned from Spurs on loan, once he got his contract he was less effective, he always had more in the tank and potential that never was realised in my opinion.

Donovan only had two short loan spells with us. According to Wikipedia he made 17 league appearances for us in total - two years apart.

True mate two second half of the season appearances but for my money brought our performances on about 15% during his spells.

If i was offered the choice of Pienaar and Donovan it would have been Landon all day.
