Steven Pienaar

True mate two second half of the season appearances but for my money brought our performances on about 15% during his spells.

If i was offered the choice of Pienaar and Donovan it would have been Landon all day.

Sorry I'm not doubting Donovan wasn't good for us at the time - I just needed to check for myself how few games he actually played for us

Brilliant player, the last one we had who could properly dribble and take players on. His partnership with Baines was immense
That's it. One of them is now retired, the other is still on the gravy train and should either be in the Championship or retiring himself soon, but won't be.

No offence mate but you're either on the mother of all wind-ups or have never watched football and get your opinions from Donovans agent!

Honestly mate, Donovan was a better player then Pienaar in my opinion.

Pienaar was here for many years of course, but if the opposite was the choice i would have gone for Donovan.

You're of course more than entitled to that opinion. For me Pienaar was a world class talent, didn't have a world class career but a top footballer. Donovan was a decent enough player, great athlete but technically and in terms of vision on a pitch was conference standard compared to Pienaar. Also Donovan would almost jump in to the stand when it came to going in for a tackle. But fair play you see it different

I do mate, frankly i think Pienaar under achieved, i also think he did the dirt on us, i think he was motivated around money, not just with the running down his contract and Spurs, but his effort for me always improved when a new deal or a contract was in the offering.

He was a good player, a decent outlet who linked with Baines well (both were very lucky that the other was around) but his impact i think is being greatly over estimated here, he was a good player for us nothing more nothing less, we have had far better and more loyal players. For his talent he should have been far better then he was.

Ya I think we're probably closer than we think in some aspects of the debate, and miles apart in others but that's ok too, it's part of what makes following football so great, not so much lately like but we'll come again

Can't deny Donovan added a lot to our game at the time. Part of it was an actual right sided threat. Which was a rarity under Moyes. We were by and large hugely unbalanced. Osman and Hibbert FFS.

Pienaar and Donovan were both great for us, just wish we could have had them both available for a whole season during that period.

At the risk of revisionism and glossing Moyes's faults, I have to wonder what he'd have been able to do with the funding available now.

I think Moyes was perfectly suited to getting the most out of limited resources, but if he'd have had a proper striker for more than one* of his eleven seasons I'm sure we'd have finished in the top 4 at least once or twice more.

Not gonna say we'd have won a trophy mind as he'd still likely have bottled the big crunch matches.

*Yakubu's first year.

I often think about that mate, be interesting to see how he does at West Ham, i like what he has done with Arnoutovic.
