One version I’d read (regurgitated in a few other posts on line) was that the parents were wanted ‘back home’ for some serious business.

Urgh. Poked my head into twitter to see how this started. Couldn’t tell the origin of the fake Starmer link, but Southport is trending, and lots of people talking about Farage saying ‘he knows loads about it but is being silenced’. Surely this is just due process, in order to not jeopardise the trial?

You've nailed it. Needs to be some publicised arrests of the twitter loons who are spreading some of this sh*** on line. They would lap it up of course as their free speech being restricted but if someone doesn't get a grip, it's going to be easier and easier to prove the defendant' can't get a fair trial.
