Squad strength?

I dont think we need to succumb to that sort of fatalism. Our destiny is in our hands if resources are found.

There's no leap for this club off the pitch either via a new stadium scheme success or a billionaire...THIS is our only realistic way of crashing through to another level - on the pitch.

We have the manager of his generation at Everton...of that I am utterly convinced. We cant waste his time here with us. We need that breakthrough moment and we are capable of making it with a bit of investment into this squad.

Whose to say that Martinez hasn't earmarked players for the summer already and also is waiting on 'developments' with others....he may choose not to buy big in this window and take a longer term approach. That's what good managers do.

Agreed on Martinez, and I dearly hope he gets it. Life's filled with possibilities and this is the best of them, granted.

I'm not really a deep fatalist - look at the business these did in the summer with Bobby here. How much does Bobby see and know that we do not? There's more than one way to skin a cat. He has more nous that we knew when he was hired, but the bunch upstairs are just as good at making the money disappear as they ever were. Let's see what they've got. Keep up the heat on their lying arses.

As far as BK and his crew getting off the wallet and really making an aggressive move? That's where I'm a fatalist - they'll need to show me something. After all, they did hire Bobby. What I type here matters not a bit - there's my fatalism. What Bobby inspires them to do this window - we'll see soon, won't we? Do you think he has a plan? I do.

Watch that space.

aye, it's a word :)

See the point I made earlier. I don't want to risk a situation where we might be tempted to sell Barkley in the summer.

There's no danger of that. The manager said so himself.

I know you're a fan of the chairman but surely you can see that spending 10-15m meaning we may have to sell the best player of his generation(again) is him doing us a disservice?

BTW with the placings money. Finishing 5-6th over 8th could be worth about 6 million.

Maybe, but he IS there and that's the result of squad strengthening in a former period.

On Gibson: he wont be back for this season. So CM and strike force are a problem (out and out forward + winger).

So it'll take time, player sales etc for us.

Yeah, he's out all season. But as a whole, when all are fit, it's a strong squad. We haven't had just tweaks or knocks we've got 2 long term ones.

Calling me a fan of BK has 'fanboy' connotations. But I do defend him against personal abuse, do give him amnesty until after the summer window, and like the romantic (archaic) notion of an Evertonian running our club.

Happy that this thread hasn't degenerated into the tedious waffle of the Board/Kenwright thread.

On the topic at hand: I agree we could really do with a 15m-quality player, but my angle is that I won't criticise the club if we don't bag one this window.

I do like the idea that top clubs wanting to throw their youngsters at us on loan. We could exploit that.

I don't know what a fanboy is mate.

You seem generally supportive of him. Fair do's, we're all entitled to our opinion.

I think two good signings would lift us and make us serious contenders for 3rd-4th place. If they're frees all the better. I just think we should capitalise.

If I was Martinez I'd think that the surplus generated in the summer needs to be added to whatever comes in off the inevitable outgoings this window and I can make a fist of the second half of the season. That is very doable.

He's an ambitious feller and if he isn't backed even by that modest amount I wouldn't blame him being here a short spell if others came knocking for his services with an acceptable package of cash + control.

Agree with that, mate.

What's yr take on my prediction from earlier?

Would you be happy with that?

I'm happy with whoever the boss gets lid. He's done right by us so far. I just don't want to see his work undermined.

He's changed the whole mantra of the club. Interesting to see if thats the case in the boardroom too.

I hope so. Just expecting to see it manifest in the summer window rather than this one.

It would have been a very different story if we had that bit of luck getting a rebound into the net from the woodwork, we would have been cheering then and it would be 6 pints from 9. So at the moment I do not buy the argument about the squad, Roberto is managing this very well and the players for the most part are giving it their all.
