how the hell it took Koeman to hook Gueye 80 minutes I'll never know. Out of all the midfielders ( though this won't be popular ) Barry was better than Schneiderlin, Gueye and Davies. There's just no point in playing Morgan and Barry together as they want to do the same job but I want to see way more from Schneiderlin that yesterday, offered absolutely zip with and without the ball.

Such a strange game from Koeman, quicker changes and I still think we could have got something from the game.

Great points, mac.

Barry is coming in for all the stick but not a man or woman among us would have had him in the team to begin with.

His lack of impact is due entirely to Koeman.

That was one bizarre selection.

Meanwhile the fact that Schneiderlin was atrocious seems to have gone unremarked by anyone save yourself and @BlueToff.

And Gana had what was IMO his worst game in an Everton shirt thus far.

But Gareth is in the stocks as the whipping boy in chief :pint2:

He was the only one trying to pick a forward pass K as well ( nearly put in a lovely through ball for Lukaku qst half ).

Mistakes aside, this defeat falls at the doorstep of Koeman and I'd like to think behind closed doors he will know that. Far too defensive line up yet the system and how he set us up was more akin to square pegs in round holes. Any 2 from 3 of Lookman, Mirallas, McCarthy from the start and I think we would be discussing a different performance and result.

Ones things for sure, if he sets us up like this against the rs, he'll be gifting them the 3 points

just watched the whole first half. Apart from a 9 minute spell between the 20th and 29th minute there is barely anything in it. I'm afraid this falls on Koeman because Gueye simply doesn't know what he's doing and Davies just doesn't have a role. Totally different to how we set up against Sunderland. Basically no out ball, as where Gueye and Davies are occupying space we could and should have had Mirallas and Lookman. Barry nowhere near as bad as was made out compared to them two, though I can't blame them because they were obviously being told to do something specific from Koeman.

A couple of times we nearly got in, though nearly isn't good enough. If i was watching this yesterday and it was half time it would be Gueye or Davies I would be looking to bring off or drop Gueye back and take off either Barry or Schneiderlin.

Agree withh a lot you say here, Mac, but there is no getting away from the fact that Barry is like a sponge sucking the whole team back 20yds, leaving his fellow midfield players with an impossible job to get in contact with the ball.

I thought Dembele & Wanyama were both excellent yesterday. Spurs dropped abit the second Winks came on for Dembele i thought.
along with Kante and Matic, the best midfield pairing in the league i would say

I agree entirely that Koeman got it wrong. That happens. I can see the logic in what he did and for 20 minutes it was working very well. But they all fell asleep for the first goal and that set the tone. The change should have been made at ht and Barry simply lacks the legs to get up the pitch.

Schneiderlin notably picked up after Macca came on (not that he could've been much worse, mind), as he wasn't having to share the same five yards of turf with a guy who can't run :D

as mentioned mate, I'm not endorsing him being picked but I certainly don't blame him for the others looking absolutely clueless. That's more to do with Koeman though because it was just such a pointless exercise of having Morgan and Barry shielding the back 2 and within 5 yards of each other, Gueye playing like a rw and Davies all over the place just trying to get into the game. Play Barry and give Morgan a rest or play Morgan and Barry comes on with 15 to go when we are winning matches. Such a pointless team selection from Ron, the type we haven't seen in a while so let's hope it's just a one off.

Hope so mate, the last 2 years under Martinez where so depressing, but win or loose the vibe seems so much better this year, but yesterday just took me right back to last year. Credit to spurs their midfield is crazy, but i hate it when we sit deep with no pressure on the ball. tough game at the weekend to come, lets hope the gaffa nails it.

yesterday reminded me of October/November and sticking square pegs into round holes when there's no need to.

No shame in losing to Spuds, quality side especially at home. Shame we basically gave them a 2-0 lead and handed them the 3 points with stupid mistakes and lack of concentration.

I think we have seen the last of Gareth Barry. Let him play the last home game and move him on.
He had one job, one reason why he started... to not let Kane or Alli turn and strike on goal. He failed badly for Kane's first. Zero mobility. Schneiderlin had his worst game for us because Barry was suffocating him for space in front of the back 4. They cannot play together.

It's not that Barry plays poorly it's that having him in changes the way the whole team sets up and for the most part it has been a change for the worse as we drop a bit deeper and play a bit slower

It’s Tuesday and I am still rankled by a lack lustre performance. Ok the Spuds have a decent team and on a roll so get stuck in / disrupt them / be aggressive / show some fight. We were pathetic and most of the comments made confirm this. Let’s hope we are stung into action for our next two games.

And, more importantly, for the game coming up after those two

Attack is the best form of defence.

Not gung-ho, but I live in hope that we'll be able to approach a game like this in the near future concentrating on what problems we can cause the opposition rather than cowering in anticipated defeat before a ball is kicked.

I do think there is a persistent attitude running right through the club that we are not good enough, and it affects both manager and players.

I can understand Koeman adapting a cautious approach after the schooling at Chelsea, but our whole demeanour from the first minute on Sunday was a clear signal to Spurs to go for our throats.

As I see it, we are more likely to win or draw when we play to win.

Hand quality opposition the initiative in possession, territory, and chances, and you rely on luck.
