Glad I stayed up for it. Why did they develop a new rocket and not just use starship?

Starship is smaller and designed for earth orbit, as i understand it. To get to the moon's orbit you need more speed, so more fuel, so a bigger rocket.

He's so endearing, if you ever watch the doc. For All Mankind, there's a bit where he's talking about the Apollo launch and he's like 'and you can hear the noise, and feel this thing shaking, and I'm strapped to this chair and thinking to myself - you know, I think we're really gonna go' - Mike, you've been training for this for fkn yonks mate!

….i have no real interest in this stuff except to be in awe of the achievements but I’ve made a note of that book to get and read on my next holiday, hopefully it’s ok for a layman.

Definitely, he writes really well and doesn’t overdo it on the mechanics or science.

I have! Read it once many years ago, then bought it and read it again when it got repressed a few years ago, its a cracker.

It's part of the testing to eventually do that even if the next few missions won't actually go to the moon.

But "we're going to the moon" is catchier as an explanation than "were testing a free return trajectory around the moon and back"

He’s probably got a 10ft tall gold statue of himself for them to drop on the surface while they’re there.
