Some of the space debris up there travels at 5 miles a second. It was investigated some years ago because satellites kept disappearing.5k mph

Al Shepard was waiting on the launchpad for hours for the first US flight and he was asked what was going through his mind. He said he was thinking how every part of the rocket, down to the last nut and bolt, had been built by the contractor who put in the lowest bid for the job
They're using their own rockets and space capsule. The old one was a liability, this is a big step into being self sufficient. nasa and co can't really be seen to be paying the russians for their tech and launches in the current political climate.

Fascinating person Ed Mitchell. Held two bachelor degrees and a doctorate in engineering. Tried to conduct ESP experiments with some friends on the flight back from the moon, claimed he had his kidney cancer cured remotely by a faith healer and was convinced NASA was covering up evidence of alien life. Spent his last years appearing at conventions where the other former astronauts avoided him like the plague.
