Some rare footage of Royston Vernon.........

Looking back at the games that we have been talking about and the current situation Now a daysall sit on plastic seats like rows of plastic ducks. It was far better back then when we were all standing, feeling and living the atmosphere. How many recall being in crowds of 50,000 plus and standing up in GSE or Park End. Wonder what the current supporters would make of that. Happy days.

Steve you have got a great memory and I can confirm you are mostly correct, I share your love of Tommy Ring an
absolute magician, he came from Clyde for £12,000 a steal, pity he only played 34 games for us.

Lovely reading about all these great days and wonderful memories.
Dave,
Tommy was a cousin of mine & it's super to read about the impression he left on Evertonians who saw him. I'm in Goodison for the Leicester game tomorrow as a guest of Eric Williams. Eric put together an incredible scrap book in honour of Tommy Ring with pictures & commentaries from the 60s . Unbelievable piece of work & a treasured possession already. COYB

I hope you enjoy the game, can still see Tommy Ring in my minds eye tricking full backs, making them go one way
while Tommy went the other, he scored two fabulous goals against Leicester City in the Stanley Park goal in a 3-1 win.
Players like Tommy will never fade from my memory

Ring' s goal for Scotland against England :

In the late 50s and early 60s when the RS were spending a lot of time where they deserved. Unlike the fixtures now, the early part of the season
midweek games took place between the Lancashire clubs, it was quite common to play United in October on a Wednesday night at Goodison and
the next week at OT. On one such night in 62 at OT, we got a penalty at our end with just a few minutes to go, Royston steps up so cockily points
to the corner first and then puts it there. That game seemed to give us so much impetus, as United had started building another fabulous side, we went on to win a marvellous championship, we beat Spurs the great Double winning side in a 'nailbiter' at Goodison. Oh such happy days!

Tommy Ring was before my time but seeing him on Pathe News you can see he was top class. And I love reading the memories of old blokes.

Venon was top class too and had a swagger like Alex Young. Does anybody remember Vernon running into the wall at Upton Park and messing his face up? I can't find it on Google.

Ring, Young, Sharp and now also from Scotland.... Naismith.

Bobby Collins was another Scottish Everton "Giant" even though he was just 5'2" but what a player. I only saw him on video but Tommy (Ring) was a huge admirer. Tommy's father came from Ireland & and my dad tells me that Tommy & Bobby Collins came over to Ireland during the off season to "relax" which actually meant going to the pub with the lads & playing cards.

Noticed Bobby Collins playing for Scotland too in that game Tommy Ring looked very fast!

Does anyone else remember that brief shining moment, when Tommy Ring mesmerised everyone, for far too few games, until a broken leg at Chelsea broke the spell. For just a short while, Goodison Park was Camelot.

I've just come across this thread Steve, and yes, I remember Tommy Ring very well. We won three matches 6-1 at Goodison in 1959/60,
the season he came. His first game, I think, was a 6-1 against Notts Forest, but I especially remember - the occasion, not the detail - of the
6-1 against Chelsea when he scored two.
I suppose you could compare his time here to Kanchelskis'. He wasn't here long, but what an impact he had.
I'm only up to page 3, and it's probably been said already, but to the poster who thought he came from Falkirk, no, that was the great Alex Parker, Tommy came from Clyde.
Geez, the Scots had some great footballers then.

Remember a mate telling me,he was sitting in the main stand in front of Bobby Collins and his Wife/fiancée and the cushion throwing started,he overheard her asking Bobby why are they throwing cushions ? To which Bobby replied, they are right,we are bloody awful,I nearly threw mine.

I was walking up Goodison Rd near the church on my way to the boy's pen one day, and Wally Fielding and Bobby Collins were coming the other way. Bobby was my hero and I nervously said something to him as I got near them. I don't remember what I said but it was something an
awestruck 13 year old would say. Bobby smiled but Wally told me to 'f... off'. I was absolutely shocked at the time and Bobby looked uncomfortable, too, but I can see the funny side of it now.
I've told this story on Bluekipper, I think, so apologies to old Blues who've heard it before.

People do repeat things when they are getting on Jeff.
