So called clear out

We won’t pay actual money for another fullback. Kenny is a low cost 4th option. We will need to put our money into CM and CB plus replace DCL and Richarlison.

I think Kenny will be offered another year or two.

Agreed, many won't, that Kenny stays. Versatile.....despite his average-ness (not sure that's a thing !)

  • Unnamed Icelandic international footballer
  • Delph
  • Mina
  • Kenny
  • Tosun
  • Lonergan
  • Gomes
  • Kean
  • Gbamin

Leaves us with...

GK: Pickford, Begovic, Tyrer

RB: Coleman, Patterson
LB: Mykolenko, Nkounkou
CB: Keane, Holgate, Godfrey, Branthwaite

CM: Doucoure, Allan, Davies, Onyango

AM: Dele Alli, Iwobi

LW/RW: Gray, Gordon, Townsend

FW: Richarlison, DCL, Rondon, Dobbin, Simms

From that the obvious 2 positions to strengthen are CB and CM, and tha's before we consider Pickford, Richy or DCL potentially leaving.
That squad looks so poor on paper

That squad is right back in another relegation fight next season.

Out of what is left
Coleman - shouldn’t be starting again
Richarlison- will leave
Davies - shouldn’t be starting again
Allan - 2 season on from joining, not quick or mobile enough for PL.
Rondon - championship standard at best
Townsend - probably finished after that injury

It’s a really dire squad, massive rebuilding job needed.

The only players we can be sure of clearing out are those out of contract. (even 1 or 2 of those may get a reprieve - Delph maybe, JJK please god, no)

We should have offers for Mina, but we'll probably end up subsidising his wages. Offers for Gomes won't be plentiful, again, euro clubs (at his level) won't pay what we do so he'll still cost us.

We'll still pay for the Koeman/Walsh summer until next June, hopefully we can stabilise in the mid table mush until then.

Out

1. Gomes
2. Holgate
4. Keane
5. Davies
5. Delph
2. Rondon
3. Mina

Plus the contract expiries obv

In that order

100m + money from sales and saved wages please Mr Moshiri. You caused this situation, now get us out of it.
I read a lot about us not being able to overhaul the squad for various reasons (mainly because 6 or 7 departures is deemed unrealistic), well, if that is the case then there is no choice but to sell those that can fetch big money. Top of that short list is Richarlison.

Evertonians are going to have to accept a simple choice: either the club DOES find a way to clear out a significant chunk of the first team squad or it sells Richarlison, Pickord, or DCL - or a combination of these.

So, when posters start pooh-poohing the departure of, say, eight or nine players from the squad as unrealistic, then let's be honest enough to admit that Richarlison will have to go. This is how Thelwell will be judged this summer. What can he do about this situation, because Everton are certain to find themselves in another relegation battle with a selection of Leeds, Fulham, Bournemouth, Huddersfield/Forest, and Southampton next term if Lampard is forced into the new campaign with the current rabble.

Issue is we can only get out as much as we can bring in, it depends how hamstrung we are by FFP. 5 subs next season means it’s essential to have a large squad so we can’t just get rid without consequence.

We are looking to rebuild to get to a certain level only, as sad as that is and then try to get to a further level from there.

At one extreme, success would be replicating West Ham (very sad), a more realistic but oft-quoted example is Crystal Palace and I'd gladly settle for the season Brentford just had.

If we can't do any of that then it's another relegation battle. We are very similar in my view to a side that has just been promoted. It's feasible and possible to begin an overhaul and do quite well off the back of it.

If someone offered us 48 points now, I'd take it and that's just a 9 point swing off the back of a hellish season. Challenges lie ahead, but they are surmountable in context.
