SSN have just said that Donovan wants to stay, and that it would cost us £2.5 million to buy out the remainder of his contract.
 

I think that's sounds a tad low, but I didn't believe it would really be too high.

He wasn't going to paint himself into a corner with this contract. In fact, he did MLS a favor by signing it.
 

Well its his last year on his contract isn't it? I'm pretty sure it would only take about that much to get him.

He did sign another contract recently, but IIRC most American sports do not require transfer fees when a player moves clubs (the only exception I can think to this is the franchise player system in the NFL).

That is true but if I'm right, the LA Galaxy don't own Donovan's contract, MLS does and it will demand a hefty fee to let Donovan out of his deal. Altidore (who is nowhere near the class of player) commanded a transfer fee of 10 million (don't remember if it was euros, pounds or dollars). 2.5 million might be what Donovan will earn under his new MLS contract but it's nowhere close to what MLS will let him go for.
 
His contract was expiring, he just signed a 4 year deal. Again, I can't see him painting himself into a corner with this contract considering he could have left for nothing. By signing the deal, it allows MLS to recoup some money from the transfer if it happens.

I know what Altidore cost, but Altidore has at least a decade of football left in him. Donovan is at his peak and will be declining.

Not true.

A NFL team can designate a player as a "franchise player" when that player is coming out of contract - unrestricted free agent. The tag is good for one year and if the player decides to stay with that team, his salary is guaranteed and is the average of the salaries of the 5 highest paid players at that particular position.

There are 2 type of franchise players - exclusive and non-exclusive. Exclusive franchise players cannot negotiate with other teams after being tagged. Non-exclusive franchise players can negotiate with other teams after being tagged and if the player accepts an offer from another team, his original team recieves two first-round draft picks in return as compensation.

So, there is no fee involved. But typically, American sports teams do not buy players but baseball teams will occassionally include cash as part of a trade.

A decade of unfulfilled expectations.

Not impressed by him one bit. Be honest, the goal he scored against Spain in the Confed Cup was a Casillas blunder, not an Altidore piece of brilliance. Scoring against Trinidad & Tobago doesn't really count.

He has been bad, but clubs will pay for potential. Donovan's career will be trending downward, if he signed on for Everton for 4 years, he'll have little value left (selling-wise) at the end of his deal.

I just don't think you can compare the fees of the two (Altidore and Donovan). There are way too many variables.
 
There are never "fees" invovled in American tranfers (trades). Teams may include money in a trade, but it's really frowned upon. Makes the team acquiring the cash look very cheap.

The players just get paid stupid money, even worse then the prem.
