Donovan's 2009 salary was $900,000 per the MLS Players Union.

I haven't seen anywhere that states with confirmation the terms of his new deal but I have read estimates of $9 million over 4 years which would make his wages $43,269 per week or 26,565 GBP per week.

Even if his contract is for $10 million over 4 years, his wages would be $48,077 per week or 29,519 GBP per week.

It's not insignificant but certainly not on the high end of the Everton wage bill.

An American Point of View

First off I would like to say I am a example of what Landon Donovan can mean to the potential Everton American fan base. Since rumors of his transfer I have been following all the message boards and team news because of what this means for American soccer fans.

I live in New York City and I have been following the EPL religiously for 5 years and obviously am a big fan of the US national team.

For the last year I have been letting all my friends abroad know that Landon is the real deal and can play in the best league in the world.
(Just youtube his goal against Brazil in the confederation cup)

But let me clear up some misconceptions:

The reason Donovan had such a problem with the Beckham loan deal is because Beckham (named captain of the Galaxy) extended his loan with AC Milan to last well into the 2009 Galaxy Season. In the press he kept saying how committed he was to the Galaxy but missed the first half of the season to play for AC Milan.

Due to this matter their is zero chance of Donovan merely extended his loan at Everton and leaving his Galaxy team out of luck. However according to Grant Wahl, he does have a clause in his new contract that allows a team to purchase him on a permenant basis. Landon has accomplished everything he can in American and knows the next challange is overseas. If the deal gets done the Galaxy will free up a "designated player spot" and will be able to fill it right away with a big name European based player at the tail end of their playing careers. Similar to the Freddie Ljungberg deal which has been a huge success for the MLS team from Seattle.

With regards to price, I have heard it will take around $7-10 million (US dollars) to secure his services permently. I would love to see this deal happen and it would mean I will be waking up early every saturday/sunday with my blue #9 kit watching everton games for the next 4 years.

How so? That's only £26k / week. I'm assuming that's on the lower end of Everton's wage scale if any of the first teamers even get paid that little. I'm bet Donovan would get a nice raise if Everton decides to purchase him.

I agree that wage is a bargain for the EPL. The point I was trying (unsuccessfully) to make was that if Everton were to acquire Donovan with below market wages that the transfer fee would feel even more affordable.

I think that if Donovan keeps doing well at Everton, he should try to stay there. We all know that he is good in MLS. But the MLS is not the EPL.
Wat?

I think some of you are making the Donovan/Beckham stuff a bigger deal than it was. Not even the same circumstances. Donovan was irritated at Beckham for not returning from his loan to AC on time, during the MLS regular season. Apples to Oranges situation. They have both since resolved any issues and are now friends. Not that it needed to be done, but Beckham was pimping the EPL to Donovan, saying he thought Donovan was ready & should make the jump.

Most MLS fans want to see Donovan stay at Everton, as it will only make him better. The only people that don't want Donovan to leave are Galaxy fans, and Don Garber.

It doesn't take a genius to realize Donovan would rather play in the EPL, but it really is beyond his control, so he just "says the right things" in the media to make it happen.

Oh, and his forehead is so big, we say he has a "fivehead" here in the states. (y)

IMO the biggest concern for you guys shouldn't be whether or not you should sign him permanently. The question is does another team out-bid you for his services after you've been so kind to display him for all to see during the loan spell. I really do hope you guys can end up with him on permanent transfer, it's a good fit and you guys are ripe for some quality to push up the league. (y)
