Would be intersting to know, how many of the new posters from the States stick around. I bet there is some drop off, but there are probably some like me that found an EPL team to support. Just curious. It is easy to tell since their join date is in Dec or after.

Even though my join date is Dec 09, I was an Everton fan before LD came. He's just the reason I joined GOT, even though I probably would have joined anyway.

He'll be back in the prem ... fingers crossed it's with us

I think the chances of a transfer after the World Cup just diminished considerably. Since Beckham ruptured his achilles, that leaves Donovan as the lone star and key piece of LA's midfield, transition and offensive production. That's an injury rated at 6 months recovery and rehab, and since he turns 35 shortly, there are questions if he'll have the desire to even return since his one motivation was a 4th World Cup appearance.

Evidently the only reason why the loan was not extended is because Beckham's loan to Milan was set for the end of Serie A this year - Arena did not want to be without both Donovan and Beckham as LA has a serious chance of winning the table and playoffs this year. If this remains the same, our season goes March thru November... so you're looking at yet another January arrival, and I don't think a presumably high fee for a transfer in the winter will be too attractive.

I hope I'm wrong though.

I'm definitely staying.

I don't post all that much, but I've found my team.

As they say, once Everton has touched you, you're never the same.

Donovan returns home with praise for Everton

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Landon Donovan has returned to the Los Angeles Galaxy following the completion of his 10-week loan with English Premier League club Everton.

Everton had been hopeful a loan extension could be arranged but had already moved on, using Donovan as a sub in its last three games.

Donovan, Everton's Player of the Month award for January, excelled in the EPL after three unsuccessful stints in Germany.

"I've proved to myself that I can play against any player in the world and that's a pretty cool thing to think," he told evertonTV. "Where I came from as a young boy, I didn't have soccer on TV and I didn't know any teams in the world outside of Manchester United or Real Madrid. To come to this point and do what I'm doing is pretty special."

Donovan said he had never met fans like Everton's supporters.

"I'm 28 years old now and I've played over 100 times for my country, I've also played a lot of league games in different parts of the world," he said. "But I've never met a fan base like this, either playing for them or as an away player. Forget about football for a moment, this is a life experience I'll never forget."

Donovan, who had two goals and three assists, credited Everton manager David Moyes with believing in him.

"Before I came, I had a lengthy talk with Tim Howard about the club and the manager in particular and Tim has nothing but great things to say about him,” Donovan said of Moyes. "I think that first and foremost, there is a mutual respect. Every time I play and every time I train I try to give everything I have and I think he respects that. I give him so much credit for throwing me in the Arsenal game and saying: 'Just go.' When someone does that, you don't want to let them down, but you also bring more out of yourself because you want to play well for someone like that."

Fantastic post from start to finish.

The Toffee bug has certainly bitten you thebes20.

Welcome to the family, and the machine.

I am not a follower of baseball in the states, but in 1994, the MLB players had a strike, from which they, I do not think, have ever really recovered. That was supposed to be the USA's national pastime. (Actually American football or basketball is now)..AND why? Why did baseball fall, especially in the youth leagues?......Well, the strike had a lot to do with it. People found other sports outlets and for a while baseball was forgotten. What this would do, if lengthy, is horrible for US soccer. Yes, the players have some real gripes, BUT, is a strike going to solve them. It set baseball back and it was on top, or close to it before the strike.
Good point, and the National Hockey League is another example. That league has not yet enjoyed a season as good as pre-strike yet, and that was awhile ago now.

Not sure that helps MLS as a league. I don't want to think about the level of play of scabs in the US. I have been to pub league matches in villages with populations under 500. It was enjoyable at the time but then I was 6-7 years old. :P
Heh, that is just me being vindictive. Obviously scabs aren't good for the league. I'm just getting irritated at the demands of the players at this point, with regards to the strike. I empathize with them, but not to strike. If the players strike, they lose any support from me. :pint:

Well we shall see, I still see a deal being struck though, for the good of North American Football. The worse thing for the MLS right now is to have a lockout season, but I can see the MLS not seeing the bigger picture and a lockout happening.
Fortunately that won't happen; the MLS has already come out and said they will not have a lockout. If there is a stoppage, it is a strike from the players, not a lockout from the league. (y)

Well you're not. Donovan was on $900k a year last season but his new deal is for $2.2 million a year. He is now the second highest paid in the MLS behind Beckham. Before his new contract he was 5th highest paid in the league behind Beckham, Blanco, Ljungberg, and Angel.

And as I've posted a couple times already the average salary for all players contracted to the MLS in 2009 was $138k per year. That includes all of the big earners and the development players making under $30k a year. If you eliminate the designated players and Donovan and the development players the average for everyone else was $105k. The median salary is $87k. I am right.

You can see it all here: MLS Players Union :: Player Salary Information
I think you're too hung up on semantics, and "being right." The original question was Donovan's salary last year, which was reported here correctly. You are updating it with the new salary in his new contract, which is also correct. Nobody was wrong, it is just two different pieces of information.

Your salary discussion might be accurate as well, but is misleading due to the misunderstanding between averages and medians. :pint:

I'm one of those, and I plan to stay. I have to, actually. Just started playing as Everton on Fifa10, and I'm (obviously) at the top of the league table 25% through the year.

What changes did I make? I bought Dempsey and Altidore. Tried to buy Landon, but I can't pry him out of the hands of the Galaxy (ironically enough).

There is a 0.0000000001 chance that Donovan was going anywhere in the summer with or without Beckham. If the Galaxy didn't want to sell him before the season they definitely won't sell him to anybody before the playoffs.

I'll bum him if he keeps up.

Landon Donovan: In England, I Would Only Want To Play For Everton - Goal.com
"If I ever went back to England I would only want to play for Everton," Donovan asserted in a press conference today, seemingly squashing any rumors of Chelsea bidding for his services.

"Playing at Goodison Park is really special. As much talk there is about getting a new stadium, there's something about a historic place. People have gone there for years. I'm just a player there for 10 weeks; this is their life."

I just want to say that I'm very happy that Landon played with Everton, it is a club I will support for the remainder of my life. I've posted this before and will again here, it simply isn't fun to follow the Manchester United's or Liverpool's of the EPL, the clubs that feature mercenary players that are simply bought like commodities on the stock exchange. Isn't it ironic, the most renowned Red Devil is a former Everton player in Rooney.

Americans haven't had the pleasure of being able to watch Premiere League games up until about a decade ago. The average American really didn't have a team to follow before that, my son being a Rooney fan then started following Manchester United, me to be contrarian became a Chelsea fan. It never felt right though, rooting for Chelsea was forced, I hated the fact that they were another of the big-money clubs.

I knew that Tim Howard was in Everton, and that Brian McBride and Joe Max Moore both played for the club, but never really followed closely. When Landon came, I decided to DVR the games, I was blown away by the immediate warm reception that LD was given. I KNEW INSTANTLY that I would become an Everton supporter.

When one looks harder at Everton, looks at the type of club, the blue collar work ethic, the great working-class type fans, the fact that there isn't unlimited funds to spend so therefore player development and hard work was put in along with team camaraderie to build the club. There are no whiny Christaino Ronaldo's on Everton, it is as hard a playing club I've seen in any league in the world. These are all the reasons why so many Americans have embraced Everton as 'our' team once we have learned about team history and all these things.

Thankfully Landon brought me here, but now that he's gone (hopefully temporarily) I'll continue to support 'my' club forever more - GO EVERTON!

By the way, MLS is a far cry from EPL. It is a league however that would appeal to Everton fans, as it features hard working players for the most part. I would appeal to Everton fans to support Landon on the Galaxy. There is no guarantee that the current labor/league situation will be worked out, Landon may very well be back in his Everton kit very soon. We shall see...
