Would you rather pay 11 million for landon for another 2-3 full seasons (then he'll lose a step and spend another few years back in the mls then retire) , or continue to loan him for a third to a half of the year and just pay his very (relatively) reasonable wages. From a business stance (and knowing how poor we are) it seems like trying to get him on loan is the best agreement.
Does he make an 11M difference in the team for the 20-30 games a year we don't have him?
Don't get me wrong, I love him in blue and dread the idea of someone else grabbing him (there are plenty in the epl willing to spend 11m on a squad players, much less starters). But if he's willing to continue the loans, I think we're getting a GREAT deal (whereas Donovan for 11M is just a high profile buy - but hardly a "deal").
I still hope we buy him, but the better "business" decision may be to continue loans. I just hope his (hopefully impending) second loan spell goes better than Manny or Jo's did...
