Distin has made lots of mistakes. However he has made lots of mistakes trying to implement a football "philosophy" (I hate that word, it sounds like Rodgers, and would use tactic) that isn't suited to him. If you get Distin to try and play like Becknbauer he is going to make lots of mistakes.

We kind of have 3 options then.
1) Martinez changes his tactics to suit the players
2) We get a manager in who can build a tactical game plan to suit the players needs
3) We give Martinez the opportunity to buy in players that suit his game plan.

I don't like option 1 because I am unsure he is capable of that, or if he is if he's the best man for the job. Option 2 I don't like, because it had gone stale under Moyes. I think we need to try option 3. January is going to be important for Martinez to start that process.

He has always been error prone. The number of errors has greatly increased this season though. I think that's down to Martinez getting him to do things that he is not comfortable with.

Whether you blame Distin for this, or Martinez for this is a wider question. However I don't think we can doubt Martinez's tactics have accentuated a weakness of Distins.

Nonsense. Distin is still the hoofer. Its the errors off the ball Distin makes. He gives people too much space.


Martinez's tactics of possession football in general are not at fault. The opposition can't score if they don't have the ball.

Its the choice of formation and lack of balance width and movement that are the weaknesses and a defence that includes an error prone defender who is giving players too much space.



A centre back and a winger will help. A subtle change in formation. Play Barkley in CM when he plays. With pace on the wings and movement will change things in our favour.
