Shoot on sight - aggressive or selfish?

Not sure what games you've been watching Bruce tbh. There were several instances yesterday where the supporters were screaming for somebody to hit the ball but they didn't. Barkley does it all the time !

Lukaku himself does it though, so he has no right to complain really.

Just a feeling I guess. I mean there was the break yesterday where I think it was three on one (or two), and Barkley was played in beautifully on goal but he miss controlled it and the chance went begging. Frustrating but you sense it was very much the right play, just not executed.

Other times though Mirallas went himself and the chance went begging. Deulofeau was of a similar style. Tough one I suppose. The goal at Arsenal or Coleman's yesterday show what can happen when you chance your arm, I just wonder if we're doing it a bit too often.

Yup, yesterday there were a couple examples of the right and wrong thing to do...part of the problem is most of our attacking threat is coming from players who still have a lot to learn but at least they're getting in the right spots.

As I tell my under 10s football team, football is about making the right decisions.

This.
Our decision-making in the final 3rd will hopefully improve, but yesterday was a very tight affair, and under such circumstances it is not uncommon to make the 2nd best choice of play. It's easy to pick out the perfect pass when you are 2-0 up and cruising. When the game is on a knife-edge it's much more difficult.

Big Rom makes some brilliant runs that don't get found. Barkley will get better at seeing them Dela and Mirallas won't. They aren't that type of player. I don't mind greedy players as long as they've got the talent to go with it.

The Mirallas ones annoyed me as Lukaku was in brilliant positions to tuck the ball home, however we'd be massively praising Kev's genius if those chances had gone in.

If Mirallas passed to Lukaku and he missed Mirallas should have shot.

Making the "right" decision is not as easy as people seem to think it is.

As for shooting on sight, we just need to mix it up which i think we're doing. I'd rather have players who do like we have now than watch us pass it round the edge of the area for 5 mins like we used to do at times.

It's all about varying the approach in my view. I think if an obvious pass is on, you should take it every time, and Mirallas was 100% wrong to not take that option, but I don't have a problem with the occasional shot from range. As we saw yesterday, the ball can swerve viciously and we have some excellent strikers of a ball.

It depends on the situation really

Ideally, I'd like the player to look up to see if a pass is on. They can then decide whether they think the other player is in a good enough position

The Lukaku one at Fulham still haunts my thoughts. He was wide open FFS!

Lukaku isn't the easiest striker to find with an incisive ball into the box because when he's standing still, it takes him ages to start moving. He's not the sort of quick striker who can hop in front of a defender at the last second, all he can do is muscle them out of position, but he needs a perfect pass to do that.

When we're on the break though or when Lukaku receives the ball when he's already running, he's much more dangerous. For now though, the game plan seems to be for him to lay the ball off to our attacking midfielders when he receives it. Seems to be working quite well, he's a constant nuisance to centre backs, and is playing well even though he isn't scoring. We're managing plenty of attempts on target.

I don't think it's a problem now, and I think if it starts to become a problem Martinez will notice before anyone one this site does.

Lakaku is a victim of his own early success.

Teams saw his early success so pay him very close attention. Give him little space.

So bobby changed the tactics to make us less predictable.

Every one can shoot in a gun fight.

Another string to Bobby's bow that. Moyes could never solve the problem why our strikers were less effective after their initial strong burst.

Aye...he moves more like Le Tissier than Thierry Henry, players who also stood around a lot, waiting for things to happen...and like Lukaku were very effective at it. But that style definitely suits a quick player like Henry more than a Le tiss or Lukaku (Yak was like that too).

tru dat

It's a fine line but with the players we have got eg Barkley and mirallas we have flair players not really creative players it's good to have these as they can make chances out of nothing but it's not always the right choice . I think we need a deep lying playmaker with lukaku in the team someone like Alex song who can play the throught or over the top to him. I think McCarthy could be that player at a later age as he wouldn't need much to change is game just needs to look for the more dangerous pass than the simple back pass . The other option is to buy a Hernandez type of player who requires a different style of play to slide the balls into him to run on. Think Pienaar and Osman would thrive of this kind of player . I also think lukaku needs to improve is touch and build up play as yesterday he had a few balls knocked to him what he failed to control otherwise he could of had a few more opportunitys on goal

I think Dela and Superkev will learn that...Martinez's gameplan has shown itself to be workable for players learning new methods (Jags & Distin now passing the ball out, Seamus doing skills, Howard improving his throwing).

That's partially why he was sent to us, they've been wanting him to improve on that part of his game. Personally, sod that...get him running from deep. He's laid off quite a few nice balls here and there, it's mainly when he's receiving it back to goal that it gets dodgy. So far, the best way I've seen for him to play is sweeping through the middle and getting the ball on the move.
