Sharpy’s return

He was a wonderful Everton player. Outstanding centre forward. So many happy memories. He was my hero after Big Bob. He took over the Latch and I was at his debut when he cam on as sub at Nottingham Forest on the Friday Night. Then I seen him make his full debut when we played away at Brighton Hove Albion. We travelled by coach on the Friday Night. What a trip that was following the Blues. Hope he says the right things on Sunday if gets interviewed. Up The Toffees.

I find it easy to separate the player from the person. Sharpy the player, Magnificent. Sharpy the board member or even ambassador...well let's just say not so good.

There is the saying, which is very true, never meet your heroes. 90% of the time you will be disappointed.

You having a go at the fans lad?

Speaking on the Sky Sports special, Sharp took his opportunity to land a blow on the Everton fans.

Before we got to those good times, there were a lot of low times and it’s really tough to leave Goodison,” he said.

“It wasn’t always a full house the attendances were pretty poor at times and you could always hear every criticism aimed at you and you could even see that person in the crowd giving it to you.”

To be fair, all of that is true without it being a specific criticism of the fans. I was there in the 80s and, even when we were winning stuff, the average attendance could be pretty low. In September 1984, the season we won the title, we got crowds of 22,000 then 20,000, then 22,000 again. And I've actually asked former players whether they are aware of individual moans from the crowd, and the answer was yes, they could hear it loud and clear!

That’s not entirely accurate tho mate, there were a growing number of supporters who were not fooled.
& could you do anything about it ? no & neither could he - ok he got handsomely paid - would you as a former great turn the opportunity down - answer is no ! BK sad too say died at the right time as he dominated our club his legacy will prove that - I did not like him acting ;like a spiv with Mosihri - he fetched him to our club - Arsenal had the common-sense to let him go & BKs Billionaire was clueless -

We may have won nothing in the 1980s only for Sharpy, & that's what I remember him for OK - not his directorship under those two fools .....

Do agree with what you have both said. It's true. Totally true. Just hope Sharpy can say something good. Bye. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum.

How could I do anything about apart take my time and money elsewhere on other things which I did.

And no I wouldn’t turn it down, what I would of done tho is be more pragmatic and not talk down to people (punters as they call them)who are simply pointing out issues and were rightly concerned what was going on with the club. He wasn’t pragmatic at all . He handled it terribly for years in my opinion.

Not sure what your problem is, all i was saying is not everyone was fooled by Kenwright because they weren’t. Some fans called him out for years.

I respect your opinion but it was the two at the helm - no one would turn down what he was offered before it went pear shaped - the DOFs got paid more than him plus severance play in blowing millions & got more of a handsome pay off - at least he served our club as a player admirably IMO

And I yours. Mate I will never disregard his time as a player, he was great and I respect him for it.

My opinion is , yes he had little influence in custodianship , my problem is how he went about things, imo his attitude stinks and i don’t believe he’s stupid either , he had problem with fans upsetting the apple cart I reckon which benefit the few not the club itself . It’s probably why it’s taboo to talk about such things on these matters for some , i suspect anyway.

Besides, it’s not my place to say who should attend or if he should be made welcome. That’s Evertonians own decision.

Yeah, did you ever hear of Thatcherism and mass unemployment, Graeme?

It battered Everton's and Liverpool's gates for the 80s. Sorry that another 15,000 of us couldn't afford a few quid to stuff in your pocket.

Typical of players like him. So caught up in their own worlds that they cant even see the lives the people who pay their wages live.

Add that pathetically out of touch comment to his groaning list of put downs of Evertonians over the years.

Early on in the HK era attendances were low as the team were woeful - fans wanted HK out if you remember even when it turn great - & the unemployment I agree affected the gates full but not capacity gates as hardship had it Liverpool etc- but in the early days the attendances were so low you would here criticism quite easy attendances were as low as 11,000 etc

We are splitting hairs here lets just remember him as our leading goal scorer post war & the success he & the team & manager fetched to our club - those two clowns wanted a scapegoat - enter Sharpy .... as a director - he was never or should have been offered the job IMO

It was my first year as a season ticket holder in 93/94 and we had a Saturday 3pm kickoff against Southampton and we had 13k at the game.

Think it was Kendall's last game on his second stint.

Liverpool - the most successful club in the country - saw their average attendance drop from 45k to 35k between the 1981/82 season and 1992/93 season.

There's no doubting the connection between Thatcherism and football attendance on Merseyside.

I agreed with all that - we were so poor our gates were low really low - so any of the players would have heard direct criticism with cushions being thrown at HK in the Dugout too... what he stated was a true fact it was a club in trouble that rose from the phoenix
