Duffy would make no difference...any pair of C B's you care to name would struggle in this team, granted the current incumbents are not in the best of form, but the overall leaking of goals is a whole team thing, front to back.

2 of our managers who looked at the lad every day in training, patently weren't confident in his ability at PL level.

I wish the lad well, but I'd have good money that he never makes a quality PL CB.

The only reason this thread has resurfaced is that we're defending like drains at the minute, but it doesn't somehow make Duffy the lost answer.

Both managers had their own personal favourites who they were going to play no matter what

Duffy's only crime was that he was solid but not amazing. Very VERY few players are amazing

Even if he had been amazing, there's no guarantee that Moyes would have played him, look at Barkley.

Martinez went out on a limb to sign Alcaraz, who promptly got injured. He simply had to play him when he came back to justify the signing

Duffy was left out in the cold as a result and then moved to another club so he could play more. I wish him all the best at Blackburn and hope he becomes a solid CB.

Duffy passed every test that was thrown his way. He's wasn't getting A*'s but he was producing solid C's and B's. His crime at Yeovil was not keeping them up single handedly, despite having a bloody good go at it. How many players his age would have managed that?

Some may say it's "small time" to keep a player who isn't super duper amazing. No, it's not small time at all, it's loyalty to the people who came up from your own system who still have more to give

Rant over

Both managers merely picked players ahead of him, that were better than him.

A young player is either good enough or not, and unfortunately every year many don't make the required grade at the club they are at, so they drop a level - same as Shane has, and they either find their level or they go on to prove the manager who made the decision to part with them wrong by bouncing back up.

There's no room for sentiment because they're 'home grown'. They're either good enough or not, simple as, and someone has to make that call

He was okay mate, don't get me wrong. He was also a fat peehead who liked the cheeseburgers a bit too much.

Average player mate. Not arsed we sold him. Rooney, though, on the other hand.... Still gutted we sold him.

Average certainly not. Whatever his size and weekly McDonalds intake quota, I watched every game he played for Ireland and saw a lot of him at City too.

He was their player of the year for 4 years running. As bad as they may have been at times, you don´t do that in a Premier League team unless you are consistently performing to a pretty high standard. He was also in the PFA team of the year in 2010.

I think many fans wouldn´t have been too pushed at him leaving us, but you are doing him a disservice writing him off as average.

As an Irish fan, I hope Duffy goes on to have as good a career as Dunne after us, because god knows we need a new solid dependable centreback to lead the defence in the future.

He impressed enough to be offered a new contract

So the club wanted him but just weren't prepared to give him a higher place in the squad, because of the aforementioned Alcaraz situation
Assumptions Michael. The manager/coaches see a player most days in training and are in a far better place to pass judgement than we are. Bottom line mate is he wasn't good enough, despite your continued protests.

Yeah, Hopefully Duffy can lead Dunne to the glorious days of fighting off relegation that Dunne did in the Premier League with City, and Duffy did in the Championship, with, errr, Yeovil.

eh? you can do better than that.

cmon, just because you play for a team not challenging for honours at the top does not mean you are automatically average. Surely you can admit that.

And I was talking about what Duffy may, or may not, go on to do. I don´t care that he has just played for Yeovil and Blackburn up to now apart from a couple games with us.
