2024/25 Seamus Coleman

I was looking at it pragmatically last night mate - we aren't signing out right the number of players we need if everyone goes out of contract - so even if Coleman, Idrissa and The Duke remain in the squad it aids the transition and manages the heavy lifting window to window and be enablers - each are infulential still in their own ways and offer value IMO.

This season is an indicator for me - i dont see Seamus playing much more for the club if im honest contract or not unless mission critical.
Gana needs to stay, sign Alcaraz and resign Virginia and Begovic.

The rest can leave. We would need to sign about 8 players to fill the squad. 5 permanents isn’t exactly a rare feat for clubs with 3 loans on top.

I see the argument for Doucoure. I can even see the argument for Young if we are talking about keeping Young or Coleman (we shouldn’t be talking about that though).

I just see no argument for keeping Coleman on the playing staff. He can’t play, as shown by his less than 200 minutes this season and being available for only 13 games out of 32. (Last season was available for 18 of 38).

People complain about “jobs for the boys” and the club being too sentimental. I personally have no issue with having former players on the coaching staff, but ive got no sentimentality for keeping players as players when they aren’t good enough for what we need or aren’t available for the majority of games ie Coleman, young, Doucoure.

Like most Bluenoses I love and respect Seamus but let’s be honest only that and sentiment is stopping fans from posting their agreement with your post.

I thought he was on verge of retiring end of last season, and made a late decision to sign for another year. I think Coleman himself knows he is done with top flight football, which is a shame but Father Time waits for no man. He knows himself his recent injury record has been atrocious and I think he will hang up his boots before Moyes makes the call for him. Whether he stays in a coaching capacity is another thing (unsure if he has completed his badges), maybe he will look to go into management elsewhere, as this is something he has spoken about before. Be good to see him involved in some capacity when we move to the new stadium however. He is no jobs for the boys, he will have earned his corn and like Baines, hopefully start his coaching career off with us.

Yes Seamus has got his coaching badges I believe, so I wish him well with the rest of his life,I’ve met him and had a good chat to him without whispering a word about football just down to earth like the rest of us but very easy to like.

I probably wouldn't have kept Seams on the last couple of years mate, certainly last - but it seems telling on what he brings that he seems to be. The advantage i see is you are going to need 25 players some of those wont play - except at a pinch - so it may as well be Seamus as not for the sundry he offers elsewhere.

You are of course right - but there is theory in the abstract and pragmatism and resource management in reality that have to be mitigated.

Theory in the abstract is just replace everyone with better players, pragmatism and resource management is - the least we have to repace the more our resources can invest in better quality for those we definitely have to replace in a rebuild.

In my opinion it wil be a happy medium between both.

So its a choose your poison on who we retain - top of the tree in my opinion are Idrissa, The Duke and Seamus for the influence they still bring.

I dont want another hump window - were we are patching up with make do and loans and a little investment - its less about the numbers and more about the quality and one thing is fundamentally true - the less you need to bring in for the resources available the more you can spend on quality.

Can’t argue with either of you, and agree we have to start building for our future.

On the other hand I do think seamo deserves the chance to lead us out at BMD for the first proper league game there, and then should immediately move into a coaching role post match.

Totally disagree with Coleman leading us out at Bramley Moor, he has done naff all for the past 3 seasons hopefully Everton have ambitions in the summer and start acting like a proper club rather than a retirement care home

Two home fixtures left on Coleman's latest contract. Surely the club would want to allow him to say a proper goodbye to the fans? Announce that he'll be retiring next month please, Everton. He'll get a great ovation against Southampton if the fans know it's his final appearance. He shouldn't start (as there is still plenty of prize money on offer), but he definitely deserves to come off the bench with 10 minutes to play.

Seems as if he been wrapped in cotton wool for the Southampton game so hopefully he gets to play in it and hopefully Tarkowski is back to play in it. I'd imagine it will be announced in one go who is being offered contract extensions and who will be released. If the club were waiting to be mathematically safe id imagine it be announced sooner now rather than later

I hope the last game at goodison doesn’t turn into a retirement announcement for Coleman as well.

Nothing should overshadow leaving goodison.

And he should have his own, separate moment of thanks.

I don’t think contract announcements will be made until season has finished though. But a retirement announcement could.
