Seamus Coleman isn't up to it.

Thought he was alright. Bad mistake for the penalty, but Jelavic missed a bloody sitter, so you can say he too cost us the game.

Obviously he's not quite as solid as Hibbert in defence, but he's a far better option for our current style of play. On our day we're playing the best footy in the league, there's always going to be off days.

Agreed mate. Despite Coleman's present shortcomings defending I dont think Moyes will want to turn the clock back in a hurry. Coleman will be RB for the foreseeable.

Final word on Coleman. Defenders job is to defend. Coleman can't, Hibbert can. Simple

Ugh it's not "simple".

And I reckon we're up there, Arsenal are playing their usual silky stuff, but (blue tints on) I'm loving what we're playing. Maybe it's because the last 8 years have been so boring.

A full back isn't just a defender though.

Been having a think about this this morning whilst sitting on the dunny, and whilst our play is more open and attacking we're conceding silly goals. Do we go back to the rigid 4-5-1 and sit back like we used to for a few games and get the basics right, or keep going gun-ho?

The irony of us fans wanting to see attractive football and now whinging about it isn't lost on me.

coleman is still young in terms of experience.
keep him in the team, keep playing him at right back, he will get better.
Its not his fault moyes has failed to solve our right midfield problem within 11 years and was played out of position.

The lad has quality, give him a run.
Hibbert is ok but not the answer.

Funny how people are forgetting his last man challenge and then the immediate interception after in the box. He can defend, what he lacks is concentration.

Well, that's what much of defending is. The more apt description is that he can tackle, but is unaware of his surroundings, I think.

And frankly, the giveaway against Fulham and the penalty today, that's not inexperience. It's just poor play.

FFs look no further than JH all season he has had a mare every game so why is he chosen over Duffy or Distan??????
smallest defence in the prem Jags playing well we cannot keep a clean sheet!

Against Fulham we didn't prevent the cross, he gave it away but Howard doesn't command his area and none of the 3 centre backs we had on stopped it.

sorry, but distin has looked past it this season.
i genuinly think distin is over the hill and on the decline, his performances so far this season support this view.

Despite his shortcomings I'm pleased with how Coleman's playing up to now, he's prone to a defensive error which has never been unknown to an Everton defence in recent years but what he brings to the right flank is great attacking wise. His crossing and running has given us an extra dimension similar to what Baines gives us on the left which has given us balance which would soon disappear or at least severely diminish if we brought Hibbert back. The people calling for Hibbert to be put back in as soon as possible seem to forget that he's 31 and has an academy training and 7 years of experience as a top flight full back under his belt over Coleman (9 if you consider that Coleman has been played at RM most of his Everton first team career). If we put Hibbert in when Coleman has been doing OK isn't going to get us anywhere in the long run since we're probably not going to be able to buy in a top quality right back and Hibbert isn't going to develop an attacking side to his game (and there's a high chance of him beginning to decline considering his age). For the moment I say we persevere with Coleman because he'll either iron out his defensive problems and develop into the right hand side Baines clone we all know he could be or we'll confirm what the doubters are saying and we'll ship him on for a tidy profit.

In my opinion though Coleman is being highlighted because our central defence hasn't been at the races recently which will always compound any error on the flanks; we're missing Gibson big time and Heitinga and Jags aren't working effectively. Gibson being out can't be helped but if I was Moyes I'd drop Heitinga for Distin or preferably Duffy since Heitinga's slow and hasn't been doing well in the air or on the ground recently, at least if we had a tall defender alongside Jags we might be able to deal with aerial balls better plus Duffy and Distin aren't slouches when it comes to dealing with threats on the floor.

The ball should have been booted to the other end of the pitch. He was one of the defenders that didn't stop the cross.

The amount of cover he gets here is mind boggling.
