Seamus Coleman isn't up to it.

People who put that goal down solely to Coleman are touched. The ball had to travel a circuitous route from the halfway line and passed about five other Everton players before it was netted. It's about as logical as blaming Hitler's mum and dad for the second world war.

Don't you have the attention span to read past the first two sentences?

Throw a list of right backs that can defend as good as they attack playing the modern game....

Itll be very short.

Scapegoat Coleman.

Coleman gives us so much going fowards and helps give balance to our team. He may have only 1 assist but that's a poor way to judge him on it's own because he's been involved in the link up play on several of our goals this season, either directly in the build up or pulling defenders away from the box to help make space for other players.

Putting some perspective on it, we're 5th and dominating most teams we play in general play. Without Coleman playing other teams would be able to double up more on Mirallas and we'd be forced to focus more of our attacks down the left flank.

Teams have countered us well before when we've only been potent down one side of the pitch.

People should give him some time, he's only had a handful of games in the position and it seems like he's improving all the time.

Baines isn't the greatest defender the world has ever seen. At the moment it seems like the only people who are there just to protect our goal are Howard and the two centrebacks...and they're pretty scatty.

Maybe Moyes is thinking that Barcelona or Chelsea's defenders don't need to be that great because the ball spends most of the time at the other end of the pitch, so we could follow that example too. I think that Real or Bayern might be better role models though. We need to be harder to score against again.

My theory as to why we're so crap defensively revolves around 3 key things:

1.) A constantly rotating CB pair.
2.) The lack of an adequate defensive midfielder.
3.) Increased attacking dominance and time in the opposition's area is making us vulnerable to counterattacks.

I doubt if Hibbert or Neville had played at RB instead of Seamus we'd be any better off this year.

He balances us from left to right but I don't think that it's working with the defence-attack balance.

___________Howard
Coleman Jagielka Heitinga Baines
________Neville Osman
Mirallas _____________Pienaar
_______Fellaini
_____________Jelavic

The players in bold are thoroughly familiar with those positions. Mirallas was Greece's top scorer and plays more like a floating second striker. Osman is never a midfield anchor. Neville is by all accounts an aged full-back and Coleman has a lot of reponsability patrolling the entire right flank. Out of the specialist defenders only Jagielka is showing any form. We need to try and balance that out.

I pretty much agree. I think perhaps Moyes is worried that we'll go back to being sterile if he tries to tighten things up.

This.

What about Johnson from the RS ?

Martin Kelly would be better.

Thought he was alright. Bad mistake for the penalty, but Jelavic missed a bloody sitter, so you can say he too cost us the game.

Obviously he's not quite as solid as Hibbert in defence, but he's a far better option for our current style of play. On our day we're playing the best footy in the league, there's always going to be off days.

Best footy in the league?

Yes we have improved but that is too far.
