Seamus Coleman isn't up to it.

I too had major doubts about his technique, always loved his attitude. Credit has to go to the coaching staff as he is technically miles better in a relatively short space of time. Did I read that he played Gaelic until quite late in his development? If thats the case, in terms of playing time, he will be considerably behind kids who have gone through the ranks. Just goes to show the value of time on the pitch for his development and of course, knowing you are believed in.

In Ireland, kids play a lot of different sports. I'd say nearly everyone outside of Dublin plays Gaelic, or Hurling up to 16/18.

And if you've ever seen the games you would see how it hardens you up - almost full contact, man to man marking, no diving, a lot of running

Just goes to show that sometimes a player needs time and an opportunity

It's rare that someone is a wunderkin like Barkley almost right out of the gates. Sometimes it takes time for someone to grow into a role and play to your best

Coleman and now Oviedo are showing that

I still have the bruises from playing it with my cousins. No doubt it has had a positive impact on his athletic ability and his mentality but the downside was that technical elements of his play were poor. He's clearly made excellent progress in this regard. Should have been MOM yesterday, he really kick started our second half performance. Someone needed to step it up if we were going to win and he did just that.

I love the fact that we're building a brilliant team on British and Irish players. Coleman, Barkley, McCarthy, Barry, Baines, Jagielka, Osman, Gibson... there's something old-fashioned and right about that. It feels like Everton.

I think we've always tried that.

Now as many know, I love a foreign player especially one with a boss name and does stepovers, but a British core is important to me.

Having had a tiny thought about it, would I be arsed if we won the league with a load of foreigners? Nope.

But it's still nice to have British (and Irish) lads.

I also thought that Coleman was man of the match yesterday and would have won it comfortably if not for Barkleys goal at the end.At the moment the English media are in the mode of building upBarkley...the knocking down will come in due course.

I, also played Gaelic football as a younger man and it is great training for a young soccer player. It is a far more physical game ,with greater demands on strength and fitness. Coleman may have lost out a little on technique at the start but that will have been compensated for by other attributes he picked up from playing different sports.

It's not just that we have British and Irish players, it's that we have brilliant ones! They're not just filler.

As a young lad I was a very technically gifted footballer but my balls were seriously lacking. I then started playing Gaelic when I turned 12 and in my first game got punched across the face twice with the ball in my hand only for the ref to wave play on. This was the norm as it turned out! Quickly my nuts began to grow like a pair of rapidly evolving wrecking balls. It was either that or be ****e and remain a coward... With my skill intact and a solid pair of bollocks now present I was soon playing for Dublin in the GAA and then went on to play soccer in the same league as Seamie in Ireland. Unfortunately I then quit due to a mixture of a bad knee ligament injury and the decision to pursue a medical career.

Anyway, in a round about way, what im trying to say is Gaelic helped me develop my soccer career massively and is no doubt a major reason for why Seamie is the type of marauding, fearless footballer he is today. No soccer match comes close to the physical intensity of a gaa championship match. I say this having played both for many years...

That 11/12 season he was shocking though, pure and simple.

Snapping Stevie Me with 2 minutes to go at Wembley didn't help, either.

I've had a few here so excuse me if this is completely wrong but today's performance against Arsenal has just confirmed it for me:

Seamus Coleman is sh*te. Why do people seem to like him and think he's 'the future' or whatever? Maybe one day he's going to be an decent right back one day, but at the moment he just runs into blind alleys and loses the ball. He's like a f**king headless chicken. Plus his crossing and his shots are abysmal. I'd rather have Barkley and possibly even Gueye there instead.

Yes, he puts great effort in, is physical and always has a go without fear, but that just isn't good enough for me. Of course we'd have better players there in future if we had money. But I think we've got better at the moment.

Views lids?

Edit: I've got to say like, he is great for the money we payed. I just don't get why people are saying he's going to be a great first team regular in years to come.

cant get enough of this
