What are the thoughts on the Scottish hall of fame withdrawing its nomination for gascoigne? Apparently he was nominated and it was approved and it’s now been withdrawn, I’m not sure what reasons as I’ve seen it’s allegedly because of his health but also because SFA members were to boycott the event .

At a guess, one, or two, Rangers supporters involved in these things thought it would be a great idea to nominate Gazza. Also, it might help sell tickets for the event, rather than someone like John Robertson (the Hearts player) or Joe Harper, who played for years in Scotland, and scored loads of goals for their teams.

When others on the SFA heard about it, they pointed out that someone who, in the last few months alone, has been arrested for sexually assaulting a woman on a train, and filmed singing "F*** The Pope" might not be a suitable candidate for a Scottish football Hall Of Fame. He's hardly what you'd call a good ambassador for Scottish football.

Gazza had two excellent seasons at Rangers, then another not so good one, during which he was punted to Middlesbrough. If two good seasons is enough to get in the Hall of Fame, where do you draw the line? Paulo Di Canio played up here for one season, was absolutely outstanding, then transferred to Sheffield Wednesday. Should Di Canio get a nomination, or do you need to have had two good seasons to earn a place?

Call me picky, but I don't think two excellent season should get you in a Hall Of Fame. He played in Italy for 3 seasons, or so. Does anyone think he'll be inducted into an Italian football Hall Of fame? I highly doubt it. There must be loads of Scottish players who deserve a Scottish Hall Of Fame place before Paul Gascoigne.

In my opinion, it was ludicrous to nominate him in the first place, then embarrassing that it was withdrawn. It's typical of the incompetence of the people who run things up here. I think we can discount the concerns about his health excuse. Maybe some of the people who book Paul for after dinner speaking, and pour drink down his neck, should maybe ponder on whether it's doing him much good, health wise?

Andy Goram, Frank Sauzee, Kanchelskis, Caniggia....

The Andy Goram, who didn't want to play for Scotland, because Rangers had some important games, then decided he would come back to play in the 1998 World Cup finals. Then, when Craig brown told him he was sticking with the keeper who had got him there, stormed off in what can only be described as a queenie fit, and blamed press intrusion into his life, then admitted it was actually just a huff in his book years later?

I think I would prefer Gazza. :)

So you don’t think he should get in so he shouldn’t ? Rather than you or other fans making a partisan decision if only there was a way in which someone is nominated and goes to a panel and is approved . That happened I presumed so therefore that’s a system complied with .
My guess why he’s not nominated in Italy abd was in Scotland is that he wasn’t integral in winning four trophies in Italy.

I’ve got some issues with gazza and his deification generally and I had them when he signed for Everton but I think the SFA has behaved appallingly over this . Let’s not forget they’ve got Mackay as performance director and a quick look through the hall of fame will show that many of the issues you’ve spoken about don’t prevent you from being awarded the honour . I’m not going to list issues with alcohol , behavioural allegations or claims of spousal abuse but there are certainly a couple in there . I reckon though as a Celtic man you’re less than a fan of Andy Goram who isn’t short of a few and he’s in there isn’t he ?

The way they’ve sought to hide behind the fellas mental health is , in my opinion nothing short of despicable. All of the stories , claims and issues aren’t new then didn’t happen last week so why the public humiliation ? If you’re worried about someone’s mental health don’t do this to him .

No. I don't think he should have been nominated. The panel, or whoever decides these things, decided he should be nominated, then decided to withdraw the nomination. Their behaviour was amateurish, to say the least, but, in my opinion, they came to the correct decision, eventually.

As I posted, we're not talking about someone who has historic offences, in the last couple of months he's been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman on a train, and filmed singing "F*** The Pope" Are you really suggesting someone like that, who only had two good seasons up here should get in a Scottish Hall Of Fame?

I didn't mention anything about spousal abuse, but what are these other instances you're talking about?

I agree about the concerns for his health reason, In my opinion, it was just an excuse, to try and vindicate their decisions to nominate him, then withdraw the nomination.

Mate I’m off out for the day so we’ll get back to it . Suffice to say I’d oppose Gerrard if I could so I get it .

We certainly agree on the amateurish . Enjoy your day .

I hope you have a good day, Harry. Those tickets won't sell themselves! :D

When you come back on here, let me know what these other cases of spousal abuse you mentioned are about.

Andy Goram. Yes, that's the chap! Actually, he probably doesn't qualify, as someone has pointed out. Great goalie though. I dare say he was a berk off the park but it's his football I'm interested in. Same with Gazza really.

Goram was an excellent keeper, there's no doubt about that, but I suppose it all depends on the criteria for being nominated for the Hall of Fame. If just being a good player is the sole criteria, and the amount of time spent in the country has nothing to do with it, or what you do off the field either, then both players would undoubtedly qualify.

If however being any kind of role model is part of it, then I would suggest a man who pled guilty to racially abusing a steward at one of his gigs, and humiliating him in front of the audience, a mere two years ago, as well as the other things I posted earlier, there is absolutely no way Gazza should have been nominated.

I mentioned two players from clubs I don't support who, in my opinion, should have been nominated a long time before Gazza, we'll here's one from the team I do support. Jim Brogan. He played a total of 14 years in Scottish football, for Celtic, and Ayr United. In his 12 year spell at Celtic, he won 7 league winners medal 4 Scottish Cups, 3 League Cups, and played in a European Cup Final. Kinda puts Gazza's two and a half seasons, in Scottish football, successful as they were, into perspective

I'm old enough to remember Brogan! Also Celts like Divers and Charlie Gallagher. Unsung heroes.

I'm not old enough to remember Divers, or Charlie Gallagher, but I remember Jim Brogan.
I was in a crowd of 110,000 in 1965 to see McNeill score the winner in the dying minutes of the final V Dunfermline. Fantastic.

Although we went to Hibs or Hearts normally, my dad took me to games all over Scotland. We used to go to London every August for two weeks intensive football and cricket watching! What players and games we saw. I was very lucky.

My dad told me he had taken me to games when I was younger, and I was bored and a=wanted to go home, but the first Celtic game I remember being at was against Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup, I think around late 1968.

The thing was that a match in those days was an event - even a humble league match. When entry to Easter Road meant seeing people like Jimmy Johnstone, Willie Hamilton or Bobby Lennox (to name three) the world was at your feet. We definitely didn't appreciate it at the time!

You don't see great players from week to week in the SPL now - not since the likes of Henrik Larsson or Gazza left town.

You're correct. When I started getting into football, Celtic were one of the best teams in Europe, and as a young boy, I definitely didn't appreciate how special that team was.

I don't remember seeing Willie Hamilton, but I've read about him. Apparently he was some player, and rated very highly by Jock Stein, but, iirc, he was a bit of a party animal.

I don't know if you've seen Paddy McCourt play, but I reckon he was born in the wrong era. If he had played in the 50's, or early 60's, I reckon he would have been a famous international player for Northern Ireland. Footballers these days have to be athletes, and, unfortunately, Paddy definitely wasn't that, but he was a very skilful player, who scored some cracking goals.
