Rangers have improved and getting into European group stages is actually quite impressive given how rubbish they've been. But the gap is still massive and I'll be shocked if they get within 10 points. Can see it being nearer 20.
I think the effort to get there (which let's face it was all about Gerrard wanting to maximise his profile by getting European exposure) has serioulsy knackered Rangers. They faded badly against Motherwell and today's game plan looked to me to be all about not having energy levels to press high up the pitch and to just sit back and hunker down with two banks of 5 at times.

I reckon that'll explain why they're 7th and not nearer the top of the SPL. That EL/SPL schedule will knacker Rangers more than it will Celtic.

I think a fair and balanced view of the game here.

The timing of this game was bad for us, Gerrard won't use it as an excuse but Thursday took it's toll big time. We looked shattered and were second to just about every ball.
Saying that I don't think you can doubt that our CBs and keeper have improved immensely. With the same ones as last season we probably go in at HT 2 or 3- 0 down.
I started a thread on Barisic earlier saying he was out of his depth, which was too harsh. I was a bit disappointed in him going forward though.
Tav I'll stand by what I've said before, not sure he can start games like this. Tierney had him on toast in the first half.
Coulibaly was a big miss, dunno whether it was tiredness or what but Ejaria was looking for that extra touch and getting no space to do anything. He was also caught ball watching for their goal.
Kent did impress me today, worked hard and they struggled with him a fair bit when he got the ball.
The weakest part of their team is their defence, from that perspective it was disappointing to create virtually no cleat cut chances. Only save of note I can recall Gordon making was when Morelos cut inside and blasted it straight at him.
Again, tiredness must be taken in to consideration. We've got European football this season but I doubt we'll have any more games defending a lead with nine men.
We've got the break now, Coulibaly will be back and Grezda should be available so that's something to look forward to. With McAuley signing as well we've got good depth in defence.
Time for Stevie G to pick the boys up, our next four league games are must win. After that we'll have a much more accurate picture of the team.

Rangers were also unbeaten before yesterday. So there is reasons to be positive for them i think.

Throwing this out there: If Celtic played down here would they be the biggest challengers to the current (God forgive me for using the term) "top six"?

I think so.

For sure.

Not immediately but give it four or five years and they would be right in the mix and in another decade would be the biggest club in the EPL.

I think you should take off your rose tinted glasses Corky, Rangers are now seventh in the league, they have won just one game, only Dundee have not won a game, Rangers are 7 points off the top yet only 2 points from second bottom and relegation play off, they have a manager who can't handle the pressure up here and blames everyone else but himself, they have just been played off the park by their biggest rivals and there are 6 better teams than them in what is a much improved league this year.
I would say there is more for them to be worried about than be positive about.

I read somewhere today that Gerrard has just presided over the worst Rangers start to a League programme in the last 29 years.

EDIT:

just seen this from Harry

Just saw that this is the Worst start to a league season for a rangers team in 29 years apparently .

If you gave Celtic the TV money everyone in the Premier League gets they'd soon have a decent side

They'd stay up on their home form at first and then would probably be up there after a few years

This is so pertinent. The quality of their squad currently is probably mid to lower half PL standard but if they could fund some real quality they would be challenging near the top.

Slippy whingeing about the foul which wasn't already smacks of a desperate attempt to cover his own team's inadequacies. Instead of admitting that his team were not good enough he tries to curry favour with the fans and blames someone else.

He should take a leaf out of the book of some PL managers and refuse to discuss controversial referring decisions, but he is probably too slow a learner to do that.

More like championship level and both teams would struggle to get out of the championship right now.

When the likes of Sinclair and Brown are your star players you know you're not a PL level team.

Speaking of the Old Firm, they missed the boat coming to England when Rangers went to the wall and became Sevco,if they had put their pathetic petty differences aside both could have joined the lowest tier of England together which would have been the National league North which is the 6th tier and they would probably be around League one or the championship now.

It must really grate them in the boardrooms of the Old Firm seeing Welsh teams plying their trade in the most lucrative league on the planet.

Their loss.
