Rangers youngster Matthew Shiels, has been called up to the Republic Of Ireland u18 squad.

Rangers striker Matthew Shiels has been handed a shock call-up to Jim Crawford's Ireland U18 squad.

Shiels previously represented Scotland at U16 and U17 level, but has been included in the Ireland squad for an upcoming invitational tournament in Spain where the Boys in Green will take on Belgium, the Netherlands and Czech Republic.

The 17-year-old was born in Scotland but is eligible to play for Ireland through his grandparents.

The Rangers striker tweeted that he was 'delighted to be picked for the Republic of Ireland'.

Even if Shiels lines out for the U18 side, he can still switch back to Scotland.

Sadly he's too good for us now

The time to go in for him was last season. His next stop will be a top 6 side if he wants to come down here :(
Mcat they're Celtic now Real Madrid mate. I'm pleased to see a local lad committed to his team and it is a massive club but pretty much any player down there is stepping up if they move to any Premier League side.

Despite us being utter dump there would be a big pull from Everton for the young lad, should we make our interest clear.

For Boyd read wannabe Sutton.

The desire within the Scottish sports media to keep the "natural order" in place is startling

Nothing would benefit Scottish Football more than to have more competition in the top league from teams outside the Old Firm. Aberdeen, Motherwell, Hibs and Hearts should all see more of their players picked for international duty. The fact that Boyd is banging on about players in lower leagues in England getting preference is symptomatic of why the Scottish national side is where it currently is. The attitude by "top" pundits is all wrong

Top pundits?
Only two worth listening to are on sportscene imo

I had a bit of a debate with someone earlier, over the merits of Michael Mols compared to Henrik Larsson.I'll say this much if it wasn't for that injury, then Michael Mols would have been spoken about, in the same breath as Larsson and Brian Laudrup.

Boyd's a frightful hun but I don't mind him spouting forth.

It's better than the usual anodyne crap we get from footballers: "Eh, we're looking forward to the next match, getting back to winning ways etc etc.........."

After the the 1969 Cup final between Rangers and Celtic. I couldn't possibly comment.
