Anyone else think he'd be a decent signing as a squad player. Can play defensive mid and centre back - at least it will stop the Fker scoring against us
:D------------------------

Sunderland have emerged as rivals to Fulham in the race to sign unsettled Wigan star Paul Scharner.

Austrian Scharner, 28, has rejected a new deal at the JJB Stadium.

And with just 12 months remaining on his current contract, Latics chief Steve Bruce will reluctantly sell.

That has alerted his former Manchester United team-mate Roy Keane who is ready to meet Wigan’s £3m valuation.

Scharner, who can play either in midfield or the centre of defence, had an outstanding game at the Stadium of Light last season, earning lavish praise from Keane for his performance despite Wigan’s 2-0 defeat.

He joined Wigan for £2m from Brann two years ago and has made 84 appearances for the club.

Keane, meanwhile will take Sunderland to Irish outfit Cobh Ramblers, where his own playing career took off.

The Black Cats, who have already arranged friendlies against Athlone Town and Shamrock Rovers in August, will play Cobh at the home of neighbours Cork City with the game set to be an 8,500 sell-out.

Keane played for the League of Ireland Premier Division side in the 1980s before Brian Clough took him to Nottingham Forest.

Because he isnt good enough! We have moved on from just filling up squad positions now. We need to buy people who can make a difference who would then force the lesser players in the team to become the 'squad' players

Decent player. For the right place I would like him here.

For those saying he's [Poor language removed], why? Because he plays for Wigan?

I actually think he's a good defender. Although, someone like him isn't a priority unless he can do a job in midfield, something am not sure if he can.

No i think he is [Poor language removed] because he is err......[Poor language removed]. Not very talented and nowhere near good enough to play for the blues.

He was fantastic against Aston Villa. Especially when you consider he was next to Bramble.

He's far from [Poor language removed]. I'd accept 'average & decent', but not [Poor language removed].

Average is a polite way of saying [Poor language removed] for me. Like the term they use for the likes of Neville, Utility player
