Salaries - The Way Forward?

...much depends on the type of player and his level of commitment/enthusiasm. Barry is not somebody who is reliant on pace or athleticism. He's clearly a top pro and a good influence. The extra year is probably the player's requirement as part of the bargaining tool. He has options elsewhere, but I suspect he's keen to stay.

People get too fixated on age - in the past 30 was the start of the end. Not so anymore, look at distin, look at giggs who was still effective at 37/38 and only this season has dropped away, terry swan song etc.

Judge a player by performance and his game - as has been stated Barry's game is not about pace or skill so he would be a good bet for at least two more full seasons and a useful role in a third. No brainier for me, offer the deal.

The risk is the player ceases to be so important. We've seen numerous instances of players being key one season but peripheral within a year or two. And I'm including here the likes of Peter Reid. A legend when we swept everyone aside, but after an injury or two and a loss of form, was starting to get stick off the supporters.

It sounds like we are giving him a three year deal instead of a smaller contract and a lump sum signing on fee. Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture. If we had to pay city for him and then give him a couple of years contract I am sure the overall deal would cost us more then this, if in fact this is the deal
