Ralphie Boy

Player Valuation: £8m
Having read in the Sunday papers that we are about to offer Gareth Barry a three year contract for a 33 year old of 8 million which equates to 51k a week I was wondering what other readers think on this subject, given that we are potentially offering Tony Hibbert a contract extension.

For me both are a no no, Hibbert as we have enough cover in defense and Barry because we should by next season have a regular in Barkley and start introducing youth.

51k over three years is a big commitment to any clubs wage bill and one that although has had a reasonable season so far does not warrant such high wages at this stage of his career.

The amount doesn't bother me, the length does.

For Barry I'd prefer two years tops.

That's fairly cheap for someone of his quality, but I'm with Garrick. One year with the option of extending would be best IMO.

£8million including wages to get Barry for 3 years is a good price. We can only get him because of his age, if he was 28 he would be nowhere near us.
Of course there is risk, he could start a huge decline from next season, he could have a major injury. It's a risk but it's a worthwhile risk as he settled here, plays a very different role to Barkley, and is vitally important to the way the team plays.
Another way to see it, Dembele, over the same time period will cost Spurs about 4 times more. Yes, he has sell on value but even then he will have cost over £8mil

Also, I'd look at the final year as a way of guaranteeing he will sign, he wants security so we may want a 2 year contract but he needs 3

Some players are an exception to a rule. Barry is definitely one of them. He's not a crock, his fitness is great for his age, so it is no risk.

He's been one of our star performers this season and if we didn't pay the going rate for him, someone else will. It would be our loss.

I've got no problem paying what is reported. It is not that big a deal anyway, given Arteta and Fellaini were both on far more.

He won't get three years at any other club in our position, no chance we should be giving it to him. Two years is plenty and if he's good enough give him another.

surely we won't give him 3 years? we've been giving distin a rolling contract for a few years now, surely it would be 2 years then the same as what we're doing for distin?
