I've read numerous articles on this incident (my wife works at Newton Hospital)
EVERY SINGLE REPORT mentions that he is an "imigrant" or that he lives in Newton "but is originally from Afghanistan" etc
It's just blatant press racism and is designed to deliberately stir up racial hatred.
If all these reports said he was a "scouser" or that he lives in Newton "but is originally from Liverpool" this forum would quite rightly be incenced.
It's a reaction unfortunately. Because of the riots in summer 2024. The social media nazis whipped up stories about anyone with none white skin or foreign sounding names being involved with certain crimes and the shy gammons gobbled it up. So an alteration was made re the cops and in certain cases now certain details regards ethnicity are being revealed so as to quell the rumour mill and prevent escalating tension.
This is just the beginning. News will eventually lead with... "an Iraqi man is suspected of blah blah blah" when if the same crime is commit by someone named Joe Smith* for instance then the report goes "A Birmingham man has been arrested on suspicion of blah blah". This racial-baiting aspect has been prompted and allowed by the musks and farages and robinsons of this world. They aren't bothered about crime or it's victims, just a wedge issue re race they can point at and declare themselves the saviour regarding.
Eventually some bright spark puts two and two together and goes and torches the nearest ethnic food shop because it's somehow connected to the apparent perpetrator of a crime and then people die. Then the narrative gets shifted to two tier policing and alleged softer treatment in the judicial system where only white men get the time they're due for punishment.
I can foresee a brasseye or black mirror episode where the news reporter explains a crime and it's criminal and then presents the audience with a phone number to vote on the spot to deport them. South Park s16e04. Where accusation is enough and moral panic gives way to disappearing's.

I have conflict in my heart about this whole situation. I think people should be proud of their country and nationality, proud to display their national flag and also understand the fear and frustration over the cultural change in communities and feeling unheard and the need to try and visually display their feelings.
I also live in Bristol and see even on my own estate how this flag campaign has been adopted by every problem household and embiggened the dregs of society - the domestic abusers, racists, layabouts and just the wannabe victims who need someone to blame to excuse themselves even more from any type of personal accountability for their living situation.
I don't know this guy but someone does. Someone misses him. A blameless daughter or mother is now grieving and faced with the trauma of loss in the public gaze. Laughing at people who have died falling off lampposts (not referring to you @Rita_Poon ) is not funny when you consider the human aspect.
Incidentally if you know Bristol around Church Road where I'm based or Bedminster where I work, all the posters for immigration are about counter protest. They all advise wearing all black, face masks and suggest force will be needed.
This is not peaceful protest by any means.

The flag ravers seem to lust after a time that never existed, the sunlit uplands of yesteryear when the car industry was eaten alive by the Japanese, when petrol shortages were common, when rationing was recent memory, as was national service. It's double speak for discrimination, which was not only rife but encouraged, hate the blacks, the gays, the irish, the disabled, just hate everyone including the poor. Rule britannia. Yes it's very sad someone has hurt themselves, and of course the impact surrounding that is devastating.
Country is on its knees, needs putting out of its misery.
I never thought the days of the bnp (by another name) would be welcomed back, nor did I believe I'd see the nhs crumble. That both happen at the same time were odds I couldn't calculate.

In my experience a lot of these so called racists and gammons are just concerned families.
I probably see a different perspective from you both working with refugees and the local community.
Calling people racists just marginalises them rather than persuade and sway. I said the same regarding Brexit and look how that turned out.
Anyway just wanted to preempt any celebration for someone's demise, I don't want an argument.
