Southgates quotes are pathetic. If he knew how he was going to play the matches and was going to be so rigid about it why call him up. Its not even as if either game was well played out and england dominated. In either match Barkleys introduction would have opened he game up more and created more attacking chances.

"I thought the three forwards the other night needed to be runners."

English football in a nutshell. Spain, Germany, France etc don't pick players because they're runners, they pick players who can play.

Even more embarrassing is Southgate acting like the game against |Lithuania required any deep thought about tactics and which players could execute them.

Imagine a club manager explaining leaving out one of their best players in a cup tie against Southend or some such on tactical reasons

can you imagine if he posted that lol

:), half hope he does mate, and then immediately jibs off international footy till they get their act together

Sacked Allardyce cos he took a bung, hired someone who made a load of money making adverts laughing about sending his country out the world cup, sums up the calibre of individual they hire really.

Imagine if an Italian or Spanish player did the same...

hate southgate with a passion, absolute coward of a manager, says he had a heart to heart on Saturday but then never give him a kick again the next day ( despite having a spare sub if I recall ) the whole system is a joke, always say they pick players on form? do they [Poor language removed].

I think Barkley is essentially back up for Deli Ali in the England team, I think it would have been good for him to come on as a sub at least, but its up to the manager. At the moment Barkley has no real competition for his place at Everton, he is used to being picked more or less every week, we may sign someone in the summer to actually compete with him for his place here, I hope he doesn't have a strop if we do.

Like the way Southgate said he changed his plans and brought on vardy and rashford because he wanted to stretch the game. They were camped on their own penalty box for 90 mins how much stretching did he think he could get.

This proves he is an idiot In his pre match interview he talked about how Ross can impact the game Around the penalty box against teams that sit on the penalty box & "bank" up yet he went with runners when there was no space. It doesn't stack up he clearly is the source at th FA who said to the press off the record ross is uncoachable. He is consistently contradicting himself over him

Gareth Southgate says an in-form Ross Barkley adds plenty to England’s attack as they prepare for games against Germany and Lithuania.

The Three Lions are in Dortmund to face their old adversaries in a friendly on Wednesday night, before welcoming Lithuania to Wembley on Sunday in a World Cup qualifier.

Everton’s Barkley had been left out of the England squad since the European Championships in 2016, but impressed the watching Southgate when laying on two of the goals in the Toffees’ 3-0 win over West Brom at Goodison Park on 11 March.

“He is a player who really affects the game around the penalty box,” said the England Head Coach. “He has great creativity but also power around the penalty area.

“That is important, especially if you are playing against teams who are banking up or packed defences. You need players who can maybe beat someone one to one and he has the strength, the power and the guile to do that.

“But also the other day against West Brom a couple of lovely floated passes and chips over the defence. He's quite an instinctive player and also exciting.”

I`m still fuming about this and know that I shouldn`t, but the way Ross is now treated is a symptom of why English football has regressed for 50 odd years. I don`t know if it`s the FA, the manager or the supporters, but when I hear from people that players that give you a 7 out of 10 every match are the standard to live up to, it`s no wonder why England is at the bottom of the pile of the so-called big football nations. Everybody knows you need the "average" players in a team, but my God you don`t build a winning team around them. There is a reason why England don`t produce the entertaining players anymore. They are not wanted. And haven`t been for decades.

The England job is like the American presidency, in that those who are actually talented enough to do the job won't go anywhere near it as they know it's a poisoned chalice.

Why would any manager want to subject themselves to the media snakepit and all the guff that comes along with the job?

So, like the White House, we are left with small-time chancers and egomaniacs mad enough to take the job and gormless enough to let the media and FA committees pick the team for them.

I mean look at the last 3 managers: Southgate, Fat Sam and Woy Hodgeson! The go-to line-up for any relegation threatened team!

Although I like seeing our boys play on the international stage, I'd rather Ross not be 'coached' by any one of these pub-team managers.

Plus, he'll be fresh for the derby! :D
